Dog with ITP won't eat. How to give medication without food?

This question really depends on what medicaiton she is getting daily. Yes it is true that some pets take time to adjust but she should still be energetic and relatively normal otherwise. She also should be receptive to taking yummy irrresistible treats. I would recommend offering her some boiled plain chicken and rice or cottage cheese to see if you can coax her to eat a full meal. Once she eats you should be able to resume her medicaiton. Also please keep in mind that some medicaitons can cause lack of appetite as a side effect so it is important to have her re-evaluated by your local vet if she is having such a reaction. Poor pup. If your puppy isn't eating and taking medicine by mouth, then she may be too sick to be treated at home. Also some medications, such as antibiotics, require a full meal to avoid causing stomach upset in your pet. In this scenario, I would highly recommend getting injectable medicines done for her at your local vet clinic, that way you can ensure she gets the medicine she needs. Discuss this option with your vet. I am unsure what your pet is being treated for, but if the situation is dire, then your pet may need to be hospitalized in order to give the injectable medications repeatedly. If Peggy has a large worm burden (lots of worms) then she likely feels sick and doesn't want to eat, and likely won't want to eat until the worms are gone. If the medication that your vet gave is a dewormer (typically a liquid called Panacur/Fenbendazole), then you can give it without food. This might clear out the worms and get Peggy eating again. If the medication is an antibiotic (Metronidazole, Amoxyclav), then this needs to be given with food. You can also talk to your vet about trying an anti-nausea medication to see if this helps with the appetite. If Peggy has abdominal pain, or is vomiting, please have her seen right away as high worm burdens can lead to a very life-threatening condition called intussusception. I am so sorry for this sad news. I would call your vet and see if they can give her any fluids to help hydrate her and get her started on an appetite stimulate. They could also possibly give her an infection of cerenia or Zofran which are great to help with nausea and vomiting. Unfortunately, she may need something to help with the nausea so she feels better and more willing to eat and drink. If you can figure out a way to make her eat and get the pred in her, it will make her feel better. The vet may even have an injectable form of prednisone or some other type of steroid that could be beneficial if you can't get the oral type in her. If these things don't work and you don't want to take her to an oncologist, then I would conisder her quality of life and euthanasia may be the best option for her. It depends what type of pain killers she is taking, as it is every 8 hours i assume it is an opioid which is fine to give even on an empty stomach. antibiotics can also be given on an empty stomach, although not ideal as this can cause nausea. try giving her some boiled chicken, treats or a canned food called a/d from Hills.

Aw I am so sorry to hear this about her. Her illness is likely what is causing the decrease in appetite. The steroid usually helps to decrease the inflammation and increase the appetite. A few things I would talk to your vet about is whether a daily probiotic and a long term appetite stimulant would help her. I would also talk to your vet about starting her on weekly Vitamin B12 injections. Most dogs with GI cancer or IBD have low Vitamin B12. Your vet should be able to give her one injection a week for 4-6 weeks then decrease the injections to once a month if she is doing well. Vitamin B12 is also a natural appetite stimulant. I would also talk to them about whether an oral steroid daily would be better than the occasional steroid injection. I obviously do not know what type of steroid injection they are giving. Some steroid injections stay in the system for 6-8 weeks where others only stay in the system for 48 hours. I would also consider putting her on a hypoallergenic diet if she would be willing to eat it. If she prefers human food, you may consider making her own diet at home. Poor girl. Yes this tick infection can definitely cause anorexia (decreased appetite) amongst other problems such as fever, lameness, vomiting, etc. Terramycin IV is not commonly used in veterinary medicine and so I cannot say that I would use this as my first line of treatment.I would simply put Ghontu on Doxycycline oral for this type of infection, steroids and perhaps a recovery food such as Hill's Recovery, Hill's A/D, or liquid Rebound. The Rantac can also help with nausea so that is fine to continue. Please forgive me but you will have to describe what DNS stands for, since this is not a common abbreviation or known drug that we use here in the U.S. Feel free to repost with the definition of medicine spelled out. Also the Conciplex is Vit B which should be continued as long as she is not eating well. I do hope that your fur baby feels better soon!
