My dog is itchy in summer. Is apple cider vinegar safe for his skin?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

I’m babysitting a dachshund for a few days while parents out of town. He’s been at my house many times but in the summer months he gets itchy here but not at his own house. Don’t want to give him any medication without talking to his parents so I looked at apple cider mixture to spray on itchy areas. Provided there are no open wounds, is this safe to do or is there any risk of allergy? Just don’t want to bug his parents if I don’t need to.

Hello. This will not hurt, but may not do much good. You might want to bathe the dog in cool water using one of the anti-itch shampoos carried by Petco. I like the Zymox line that uses a little hydrocortisone, but any shampoo/conditioner that has either hydrocortisone or Pramoxine will be suitable & should provide at least some temporary relief. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
