My dog has itchy skin. What topical cream helps allergic dermatitis?

I'm sorry that Mya has been having problems with continuing skin allergies! Unfortunately it is a life long problem, and there isn't an OTC cream that can help keep it under control. This kind of problem is best managed with a daily oral medication, and I'd recommend speaking to your vet about Apoquel. It's an excellent medication for dogs with allergies that has had great success in giving them relief. This may be a viable option for Mya, but speak with your vet to get their opinion. Good luck!

This can be caused by various reasons such as fleas, mites ,fungal infection, bacterial infection and allergies. the first 4 needs to be ruled out before we start treating for allergies. in order to do that first de-flea Shiro with a high quality flea treatment such as advantage spot on, if it doesn't help - take him to the vet in order to check for/treat the other possibilities. If everything is ruled out, then an allergy treatment can be started. Usually an hypoallergenic food is a good way to start together with anti histamines. if it doesn't help - the best solution is a medication called Apoquel which treats allergies with great success and without side effects.

It's not recommended to use topical cream as the creams that help with itchiness can make the demodicosis worse (steroids). Once Roxy has started a systemic treatment for Demodex (I recommend Bravecto tablet) the itchiness should get much better within a few days.

It sounds like Zumba is having a form of allergy. There are different form of steroids that can be prescribe and that can help but definitively this medication is the best to resolve the itch (I would continue with that). I would discuss it with your veterinarian, as long acting injections and minimal oral dosages are available. There is also a nice topical spray available, it's called Cortavance and you can get it at the vets.

Poor guy. Yes the vet will need to now give him stronger medication such as a steroid shot/pill and/or another anti-histamine like Hydroxyzine. I would also recommend a topical pet friendly cream from your vet, such as Resortin ointment which has an antibiotic and a steroid in it to help with itching. You may also be able to find a similar topical cream from your local pet store; however giving him something systemically (the steroid shot or pill) is needed to help his itch the best. Hello. If his skin is damaged, then you want to use an antibacterial shampoo until the lesions heal. Anything with Benzoyl Peroxide or Chlorhexidine will work well. You will need to probably bathe him every few days, so alternate with a shampoo that has anti-itch properties such as Pramoxine or 1% hydrocortisone. The key to using any medicated shampoo is to make sure you leave the lather on for 10 minutes before rinsing. Finally, you should use a skin barrier preparation that contains ceramides.
