My Havanese has itchy ears, but the vet said they're okay. Why?

There are many reasons for itchy ears outside of a bacterial or yeast infection which has been ruled out, food sensitivities, allergy/atopy and thyroid disease can cause similar signs. I recommend tryign a hydrolysed food trial for 8 weeks with royal canin hypoallergenic or hills z/d (no treats, flavored tablets etc with only water to drink) to see if this reduces the itching. Blood tests to identify triggers and assess for hormonal conditions as well as allergy medications may also be required if not resolving

Itchy ears are most commonly a sign of allergies. Your dog may have food allergies, environmental allergies, or parasitic/bacterial skin infection. If he hasn't had a skin scraping to rule out parasites, or skin cytology/culture to look for bacterial or yeast infection, these things should be done. Some dogs actually have skin tumors or autoimmune skin disease that is causing the itching, and those dogs need to have fine needle aspirates or skin biopsies taken for diagnosis. Also, you should try a veterinary prescription allergy diet like Hills z/d for 8-10 weeks fed exclusively to treat potential food allergies. It's really important to feed ONLY the prescription diet during this time. Also, I have had great success with the oral pill Apoquel for some allergies as well, and this is a medication that is much safer to use long-term than steroids like prednisone. If this course of diagnosis and/or treatment is not possible with your current veterinarian, pursue a second opinion somewhere else. If all of these options are explored and your dog is still itchy, it's time to visit a veterinary dermatologist specialist.

At 7 months old, most of her teeth should be in place, and teething does not normally cause ear issues in dogs. Possible causes for her itchy ears include bacterial or yeast ear infection, mites, fleas, or allergies. You can try a medicated ear flush like Dechra Malacetic Ultra Otic for a few days, as well as having Princess on a good flea preventative. If it doesn't get better, she should be seen by a vet for evaluation. The vet will probably do a thorough otic exam and an ear cytology to find the cause of the itch. Then appropriate medications can be prescribed.

Poor Bowser! The only concern I have is that he may have something stuck deeper into the canal. You can try some Benadryl twice a day to see if this helps his itching. See link below. If not, I would have your vet take a look deeper into his ear canals to make sure nothing is stuck and there isn't an infection deeper. I would actually be more concerned that Zeke has developed an ear infection. It's possible that the moisture from the bath caused an overgrowth of yeast or bacteria, but it's also possible that he has an underlying allergy leading to an infection. I'd recommend seeing your vet so they can examine his ear. They might recommend taking a sample for cytology to look for yeast and/or bacteria under the microscope. They can prescribe medications if it does seem consistent with an infection.

It is hard to say exactly what is causing the itching the and scratching in the ears without examining Luna first but it could be due to a yeast or bacterial infection or perhaps just a ball of ear wax stuck down in her ear canal. If the itching is more on the outside of the ear than on the inside, it could be due to a flea allergy. Fleas like to hang out by the ears, neck, and tail base region. If you've been cleaning out the ears frequently and she is still itching, you may want to have Luna examined by your veterinarian to check for an ear infection, fleas, and to get a better peak down in the ear canals. Your veterinarian may take a sample of the material in each ear to check for an infection. Luna may need ear antibiotics or other medications as needed.
