Why does my dog keep itching and biting her back? Shampoos failed.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Typically dogs scratch those areas when they have fleas. Even if you aren't seeing fleas it doesn't mean they aren't there. I recommend getting all pets in the home on monthly prevention every 30 days for at least 3 months. I would call your vet for a dose of Benadryl too. If the Benadryl doesn't help, she may need something stronger to relieve the itch. Good luck and kisses to Meka!

Skin issues like you are describing can have a variety of causes, including skin parasites (fleas or mites), allergies, an infection, or an underlying medical issue (Cushings disease, diabetes). I would recommend he be evaluated by his regular veterinarian to determine the underlying cause for his skin lesions, have any necessary testing done (bloodwork, skin scrape, culture) and start on any treatment that he may need. Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. This still may be a skin allergy but Benadryl sometimes does not work. I would recommend using a shampoo such as Douxo PS Chlorhexidine combination shampoo and bathe twice weekly until resolve. I would also recommend using products such as welactin omega 3 fish oil, essential 6 spot on by dermoscent and malacetic conditioning spray. I hope this helps! I am so sorry that you are having this problem with Nyla. I certainly understand how frustrating it is to watch your dog be so itchy. If you have seen fleas on Nyla, a flea and tick shampoo will only work for about 2 days, so you will need to find a long term flea preventative option for her. Unfortunately, even when we remove the fleas, if a dog is allergic to flea bites, they will stay itchy. Hi, thanks for using PetCoach! Poor Kobe! He looks as though he should be miserable. That location on the back is classic for fleas. I would check closely for that. Some dogs are flea allergic and it only takes one flea bite to cause an allergic reaction (from flea saliva). I would use a good flea and tick preventative on both your dogs. I like the Seresto collar or any of the oral medications (Nexgard, Simparica, Bravecto). Kobe should see a Vet to ease his suffering. You can find low cost veterinary clinics with in some SPCA's. He ideally needs antibiotics and steroids. It really comes down to figuring out what is causing his allergies so that they can be treated or the specific allergen avoided. A secondary infection is likely and also needs to be addressed. There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). If that does not seem to be the issue then you are left out having to check for environmental allergies which require blood and/or skin tests. Allergies can be very frustrating to deal with at first but so rewarding at the end when we are able to treat them effectively!

Hello. Poor Chiquis has allergies, probably an inhalant one to pollen, grasses or dust mites. If you can get her to your veterinarian, she will have very good medications to control the symptoms. These include Apoquel & Cytopoint . You can try a hypoallergenic shampoo to help quiet her symptoms, but this will be temporary, lasting a day or so. But you can bathe her 2-3 times a week to minimize the symptoms. I would try Douxo Calm, or Hylyt antiitch shampoos, both available on Chewy.com. Also, start her on a fish oil supplement. I really recommend Nordic Naturals, also available on chewy.com, to help with the itching. Her symptoms can be controlled, but not cured unless you invest in allergy testing & a desensitization protocol, so check in with your veterinarian at your earliest convenience.
