My dog is biting her legs raw and losing fur. What should I do?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Typically dogs scratch those areas when they have fleas. Even if you aren't seeing fleas it doesn't mean they aren't there. I recommend getting all pets in the home on monthly prevention every 30 days for at least 3 months. I would call your vet for a dose of Benadryl too. If the Benadryl doesn't help, she may need something stronger to relieve the itch. Good luck and kisses to Meka!

Poor girl. This looks highly suspicious for a mite issue (Demodexx). This could also just be a really bad allergy. I would highly recommend taking Beretta to your vet to have her skin tested. The vet needs to do a skin scrape to confirm if this is a mite problem first. If so, then you do have some reasonable options for treatment. Treatment for mites nowadays can come in the form of a flea preventative such as Simparica, Nexgard, or Bravecto. These all treat for demodexx mites given once every 30 days. These are prescriptoin only medications. It also looks like Beretta has a secondary bacterial infection on her skin. You will need to have your vet put her on a short course of antibiotics to clear this up. Until you can get her seen, it is best to get her started on a good topical shampoo. My top pick here for something that doesn't require a prescription is Duoxo calm shampoo available online. Also daily pet fish oils are best for pets with skin allergies since they are a natural anti-inflammatory. Visit your local pet store to see what options you have since all of them are equally effective in pets. I hope that Beretta's skin improves soon! Best of luck moving forward. Take care.

This sounds like a food allergy to me, though fleas are a constant threat and she should be on a good quality flea prevention from your vet. Food allergies in dogs are almost always due to a sensitivity to the protein source. I suggest a food trial. Get a food that has a protein source your dog has never been exposed to, such as venison or duck. Ask you vet about limited protein foods they recommend. Also, treat your house and yard for fleas, just to make sure this isn't a problem. Fleas are opportunistic and will hitch a ride indoors on your pant leg. Behavioral chewing is much less common, but in order to curb that possibility, make sure Yuki gets plenty of playtime and exercise, to tire her physically and mentally. Poms are smart little things and behavior problems often stem from very intelligent dogs not having enough to keep them busy, they need a 'job'. Teach her obedience, get her involved in agility, take her for walks, runs, arrange playdates with other dogs, take her with you wherever you can, teach her tricks, play fetch, anything and everything you can to tire her body and keep her mind busy. Consider getting her a slow feeder or puzzle feeder to make her 'hunt' for her food, and thereby keep her mind occupied and stimulated. The best toy I've found for dogs that need something to do is a Kong toy. They are great for chewing, they bounce randomly so some dogs learn how to amuse themselves with it, and it has a hollow place you can stuff with peanut butter or some other treat to keep her quiet and occupied and not chewing on herself. Hopefully some combination of these will help distract her from chewing herself.

Possible causes for that severe of an itch are: scabies mite (exposure to foxes or other dogs that are itchy?), allergies or a skin infection. Even a few fleas can cause a severe flea allergy response. When a dog has a flea allergy it just takes one flea because they are allergic to the saliva of the flea. Since Toby is chewing herself raw she needs to see a Veterinarian. There are no at home drugs that will be sufficient to reliever her discomfort. After your Vet examines Toby they may want to do a skin scrape to check for scabies. Scabies is treated with ivermectin injections of topical Revolution. If she has a skin infection she could receive oral antibiotics and something to relieve her scratching, either prednisone or aopquel. She needs to be on year round flea prevention if a flea allergy is possible. I would recommend either Nexgard, Simparica, Bravecto or the Seresto collar. It really comes down to figuring out what is causing his allergies so that they can be treated or the specific allergen avoided. There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). If that does not seem to be the issue then you are left out having to check for environmental allergies which require blood and/or skin tests. Allergies can be very frustrating to deal with at first but so rewarding at the end when we are able to treat them effectively!

Hi there. It sounds like Fifi has allergies. This could be to due to food or something in her environment but her symptoms are typical of allergies. I would recommend having her checked by your vet. If she does have allergies medications like apoquel can help immensely but best to make sure nothing else is going on. I hope that helps! Skin issues like you are describing can have a variety of causes, including skin parasites (fleas or mites), allergies, an infection, or an underlying medical issue (Cushings disease, diabetes). I would recommend he be evaluated by his regular veterinarian to determine the underlying cause for his skin lesions, have any necessary testing done (bloodwork, skin scrape, culture) and start on any treatment that he may need.
