My dog's inflamed prepuce: yelping, lethargic. Is this normal?

The prepuce is very swollen. This is not normal. There is likely a serious problem going on and he needs to see a veterinarian for an exam. There are no home remedies that can be recommended without knowing the underlying cause of his condition. You can use warm water to wash the opening to the prepuce to see if you can "open" it and you can ice the rest of the prepuce to see if you can get the swelling to go down. That is the best I can tell you right now without more information.

Poor Remy! Without seeing it, I cannot say for sure what the cause is - it could be from an infection, licking it a lot, humping too much, a laceration on the inside of the prepuce and much more. With it being SO swollen, I would strongly recommend to have your vet look at it. I worry that Cephalexin won't be a strong enough antibiotic unless your vet has seen the prepuce already and they have determined that it is. Again, I need to see it in person to make the judgement call. Also, it sounds like he may need an anti-inflammatory pain medication to help with some of the swelling. Do not give any human pain meds as these are toxic to dogs. Your vet will be able to prescribe this once he has taken a look at it. I hope this helps!

Thanks for visiting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. It is a bit discomforting for the pet, mostly because they are not used to fluid being pushed into that area. But it is a necessary procedure to resolve conditions of infection along the prepuce. Once the material is flushed out, the pets do feel so much better, so it is a necessary thing to get the pet feeling better. I would say that you should watch out for any continued or increase in licking the area after the procedure. It could indicate that the procedure wasn't sucessful and may be needed again to reach full resolution. Also, just to add, if you are concerned about your pet, or if you know that your pet doesn't tolerate procedures done at the vet very well, then you can ask the vet to do a mild sedative before the procedure is done. This will allow your pet to be able to calmly go through the procedure, and perhaps not remember a thing. Best of luck with your pet Romeo going forward. I hope that the procedure goes well for him. Poor guy. Scruffy has likely caused some trauma to his penis, leading to inflammation and this can lead to the penis getting stuck outside the sheath, strangulation of the penis, and even infection. I am unsure exactly how the penis currently looks, but the treatment is dependent on its current condition. If it is stuck outside the sheath then the vet needs to treat this by doing a sugar pack on the penis, or similar method to reduce the inflammation enough to replace the penis back inside the sheath. Also KY jelly is often used to facilitate this. If infection is present then oral antibiotics along with a copious sterile flush (i.e. chlorhexidine solution 3% diluted) of the penis is needed. Pet friendly NSAIDS (i.e. Meloxicam, Rimadyl) are also often need to reduce inflammation and provide comfort.

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. From the pictures it appears as though chewy has a lot of inflammation in this area. I would suspect he has been chewing and licking this area and has caused a hotspot (moist dermatitis). I would recommend placing a rigid plastic cone around the neck to prevent him from licking this area. I would also recommend applying s topical medication such as zymox topical ointment and apply to the area until resolved. You can find this ointment easily online. If the area does not heal or worsens, I would recommend having a veterinarian take a look at this for further testing and treatment recommendations. Hello. If the split looks healed, & this seems to be what you are describing, then I would not be concerned at all, especially if the prepuce covers the entire penis. Male dogs, especially unneutered ones, will lick quite a bit. That is normal. There is a possibility of an infection within the sheath, but your veterinarian will need to see if this is the case & if necessary, prescribe an antibiotic to treat.
