My dog has inflamed, dry, itchy skin. Vet couldn't diagnose. What now?

I would recommend that you have a veterinarian examine Bruno so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. This looks like a severe contact reaction or a severe skin allergy. There are many treatment options for allergies including Cytopoint injection, which helps in cases of atopic dermatitis. There are shampoos such as Douxo PS Calm shampoo and calming sprays that contain a steroid and topical anesthetic to provide relief. This requires anti-parasite medication to treat Browny with. In the US we use products such as Bravecto and Nexgard to treat skin mites, so something comparable should help with a mite infestation. He may also be dealing with a bad bacterial skin infection in addition to the mites or as its own primary problem. He may also need a 2-3 week course of an oral antibiotic and medicated shampoo such as Douxo PS Chlorhexidine combination shampoo and bathe twice weekly until resolved. I would talk to your veterinarian about skin mites as the possible cause, a skin infection or allergies as the cause. If he does not have skin mites or a skin infection, this could certainly be a severe allergy such as Atopic Dermatitis. With Atopic Dermatitis, certain medications like Atopica or Cytopoint can prove to be quite beneficial and helpful at eliminating or reducing the clinical signs. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Bruno! I would have him rechecked. I would clean the skin and shave the fur away. I would consider oral steroids and oral antibiotics. I would also consider treating with with Nexgard to rule out demodex. I would also consider a different eye ointment, one with a steroid in it. Be sure your Vet checks to be sure he doesn't have a clogged tear duct or any other ocular issue that would cause increased tearing. I hope this helps and I wish you and Bruno the very best!

We call this superficial pyoderma. For these, I recommend topical therapy and skin supplementation. If after 10-14 days there is no improvement with this approach, I recommend visiting the veterinarian and having the vet take a look at Po so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made.
