My dog fell, now his butt is inflamed. Is it an anal prolapse?

It is a little difficult to say exactly what is going on with Daisy - she may have a recital prolapse (a condition where some of the tissue in the rectum actually comes out) or chronic irritation if she is scooting on carpeted areas. Scooting may be related to anal gland impactions, infections, or intestinal parasites. I recommend having Daisy seen by a vet as soon as possible because she is likely uncomfortable and the conditions above require treatment. I hope all is well!

That looks like she has an anal prolapse, which is when the anus is displaced outside the body. It will need to be put back into place and the best person to do this is the vet. Hello, thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I unfortunately cannot tell much about how the anus is functioning by looking at a photo. Testing has to be done in person by a vet to see if the sphincter is responding. I do not see a prolapse in this photo. I agree the anal opening looks flaccid but that is all I can say. I strongly recommend you take him to a vet for an exam especially if you think he is straining. At 2 months old he is ready for his first vaccinations anyway and if he has not been dewormed already that needs to be done as well.

Thank you for providing pictures of Madden's anus for me to see. From the pictures, it could be that he has a rectal prolapse, or he could have impacted anal sacs causing this redness and swelling. The best thing to do is take him into a vet as soon as possible. The vet can diagnose what is causing this redness and swelling, and can treat him for it. Good luck, I hope this helps!

Your puppy has a prolapsed rectum. The first thing you need to do is put some water on it to moisten it, then put a thick coat of vaseline on the pink area to keep it moist. I am afraid you will need to take this puppy to a vet as the vet will have to reposition the rectum back inside and then make a purse string suture around the anus to keep it from prolapsing again, yet leave enough space for feces to pass. This is a tricky job and easily botched by a lay person. So you should take this puppy to a vet.

It does not appear to be a traditional case of rectal prolapse. It could be an issue with the internal rectal muscles, or could be normal for her. I would have Daisy Mae checked out by a vet. They can do a thorough physical and neurologic exams, and x-rays to see if there is a congenital disorder. This will help you plan for her future and possibly start special exercises to strengthen her hind end.
