Does dog hypothyroidism affect heart rate, breathing, CRT, urination?

Hi. Unfortunately, to determine the cause, she would need a full work up. Breathing problems are not typical of hypothyroidism. Panting can occur with Cushings or hypothyroidism, but not respiratory raspy/labored breathing. I would have them do chest radiographs as soon as possible.

Panting is not a common sign in dogs taking medication for hypothyroidism. However, I did a little digging through some veterinary databases and found some reports of dogs panting excessively with different brands/dyes in the levothyroxine medication. Panting can be a sign that Bobbie's levothyroxine dose is too high, or could be a sign of other conditions, such as heart disease, pain or anxiety. Regardless, I recommend taking her to the vet for further evaluation. They may want to recheck her thyroid blood tests to check her current levels and will want to examine her to check for other problems. I hope this helps and that all goes well!

If your dog had a heart or lung problem, she would have a high heart rate as well as a high respiratory rate. That said, a heart rate of 50 per minute is quite low, so I am thinking you may not be counting right. Count the beats for 15 seconds and then multiply by 4. Do this three times in a row and then take the average.I recommend you trust your vet. If he says all is well, then all is well. He would not do the dental cleaning under anesthesia if he though there was an exceptional risk.

If heart and lung issues have been ruled out with Chole's veterinarian, the coughing may be due to a collapsing trachea which can cause a goose honking cough and can cause syncope or fainting due to lack oxygen. This can be diagnosed with an exam and chest x-rays. Hypothyroidism (low thyroid hormone) is not uncommon in dogs and can cause increased water consumption as well weight gain. I would recommend running a full Thyroid panel (Total T4, Free T4, and Thyroid stimulating hormone ) to confirm the presence of a thyroid problem. If Chloe is hypothyroid, thyroid hormone replacement medication is typically given. I hope this helps and thanks again for posting!

The only way to know if this is related is to have the thyroid level checked again. I recommend to call your veterinarian and let them know what you are seeing. They will advise on how much medication to give and when to test. The only way to know if Glanni truly has thyroid disease is to stop all medication for at least 2 weeks. Then test a thyroid panel that includes the Total T4, the Free T4 by equilibrium dialysis and the Thyroid stimulating Hormone. This will give you a complete and accurate idea of his thyroid function. I do not advise to make any changes to the medication with out first speaking with your regular veterinarian. Also keep in mind that the behavior could be coincidental and related to something else entirely. Best of luck.

HI, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! If you want to rule out hypothyroidism 100% you should have a profile done that includes fT4, TSH, T3, fT3. I like the profile to Michigan State. With that being said, hypothyroidism at 21 months old is exceedingly rare. It occurs in larger breed dogs more commonly. These dogs have stunted growth, have retention of "puppy coat," orthopedic abnormalities due to delayed growth plate closure and many other obvious abnormalities. Dynasty looks very normal.
