My dog hurt her leg, vet prescribed meds. Is it safe to wrap her paw?

Hi there. No, I would not recommend attempting to place any kind of wrap or bandage at home - this is not likely to be helpful, and often makes things worse. If your dog is painful enough that he yelps when he gets up and is limping on one of his legs, I would strongly recommend taking him to the vet to find out what's wrong. Your veterinarian can examine his leg and take x-rays if needed to help diagnose the problem and see what kind of treatment is needed.

If you can keep her from walking or running around by putting her into a crate, for example, and can so make her rest, then this will likely alleviate some pain. However if the pain increases or your dog appears to be very painful, you will need to take Saki to an emergency veterinarian for an exam, diagnosis and pain control. I would not recommend attempting to place a bandage - it is very easy to make a bandage too tight which could cause more damage. Let the paw air day, and if Carson is limping in the morning or if the paw still seems red or irritated I'd recommend having your vet take a look.

There isn't much you can do to help her since there aren't any over the counter medications that are safe to give her. In humans, we would do RICE - rest ice compression and elevation. But those are hard to make a puppy do. So try to keep her from running or jumping, and use a bag of frozen peas wrapped in a thin towel for 10-15 minutes several times a day.

Poor Layla! If she is still limping I would make an appointment to have her seen by your vet. She may have injured her nail(s) as you described, or she may even have some soft tissue swelling/ irritation or a fracture. If there is a stick/ splinter/ other foreign object in her paw the vet can help remove it and treat it to help prevent infection. Pain medications meant for humans can be very dangerous (and even deadly) for dogs, so I do not recommend giving any to Layla without consulting with your vet. I recommend keeping her in a crate or in a room where she can't run/ jump on anything and only taking her out for very short bathroom breaks until she is no longer limping. Make sure she's on a leash so she can't run and make things worse.

We would recommend that you have Roxy physically examined by a veterinarian or at the nearest veterinary ER. She may need x-rays of the paw/leg and medications. Those are things we cannot do online, but can be done in a brick and mortar clinic. In the meantime, restrict activity to just leash walks for elimination.
