Why is my dog hungry and sick after switching to grain-free food?

It sounds like Sprinkles doesn't like this food at all, and that may be why he stopped eating and is now eating very little. I see this food is grain free, and I'm not sure why you made this switch. The truth is that grain free food is a fad, and there is no scientific proof that grain free food helps dogs at all. Food allergies are rare in dogs, and the most common of food allergies is actually protein. That makes grain allergies quite rare. Grains are beneficial to dogs, they provide a source of energy and dogs like the taste of them. If he doesn't have a proven grain allergy, then I recommend switching him back to a food with grain. I'm sorry Bane has been so sick! It sounds like the Rachel Ray food you gave him may be the cause of this vomiting, as a sudden change in diet can cause these symptoms. The food itself could be causing the symptoms as well. Given that he is still vomiting and won't eat, it's best that Bane is seen by a vet right away. He may need anti-nausea medication to stop the vomiting, which the vet can give him. In addition, because both your dogs experienced vomiting from that food, I would not feed it to them any more. I personally never recommend feeding dogs grain free food unless they have allergies. Dogs do need grains, they are beneficial to their health. I recommend feeding Royal Canin, Hill's Science diet, Purina ProPlan, or Iams.

Ideally anytime there is a diet change you want to do it over a week. You gradual mix the two foods and add kore and note if the new food each day until at 7 days you are 100% in the new food. Grain free is not really a problem for dogs... good for you!

Thats hard to say. Pets can have upset stomachs for many reasons. This can range from bacterial over growth, to parasites, to inflammatory bowel disease to kidney disease to even cancer. Without a physical exam and likely some basic diagnostics, its impossible to know the cause. Home made diets are not good long term unless they are formulated by a veterinary nutritionist. Otherwise the diets are often unbalanced which can result in problems if they are fed long term. At home you can try feeding her a bland diet of 25% boiled white meat chicken and 75% plain boiled what rice. Feed this for 1 week. Giving her probiotics during this time may also help. If she is not back to normal after 1 week, if she gets worse or if it returns, she needs to see her veterinarian. This diet is not balanced but it is fine to feed for this length of time. Hello. Unfortunately, it will take a hands on exam & some diagnostic tests such as x-rays to definitively say what is going on. She may have some chronic reflux & that is why the Pepcid seems to help. I would definitely take her off the grain free diet & switch her to a sensitive stomach formula. Hill's has an over the counter food for this. The reason I recommend this is many grain free foods actually have more fat added for taste & Mia may have some problems digesting the extra fat. I would try this first, then possibly go to a limited ingredient food made for allergies in dogs. There may also be an infectious component to the cough, so we really cannot rule out chronic bronchitis or heartworm disease. And some of the grain free diets have been linked with heart disease. Grains are very rarely the cause of any skin issues so switching Kyya to a normal, grain containing diet is recommended. Keep in mind that the link is not understood but as long as the pet is not showing signs of heart disease, changing the diet will help avoid any heart pathology. The brand I like best is Royal Canin.
