Can I give my dog human insulin for their diabetes, is it safe?

  Hello. I would hold off giving Hailey any more insulin until you speak with your veterinarian tomorrow. Being hyperglycemic for a short time is better than being hypoglycemic, so give her a small snack now, & divide her evening meal into two feedings, 1/2 at her regular time & the remainder before bedtime.   Glucose in the urine is a good screening test for diabetes; however you can still get some spillage of glucose in the urine and still have controlled diabetes status. If you don’t see increased urination and drinking and don’t have high readings on your periodic glucose curves through your vet, then Ellie’s condition is being managed well at the 3 units BID. Most pets need around 0.5 unit/kg twice daily dosage to manage their Diabetes well.

  Thanks for the question. I'm sorry to hear Poppy has been diagnosed with diabetes, but I'm glad to hear she is being taken care of. At this point, I wouldn't make changes until you see your veterinarian. Some vets recommend a specific food for diabetic pets, depending on what brands are available in your area, and your vet may even recommend a prescription diet. It can take a little while to get the hang of insulin administration, but most pets tolerate it well. I wish you and Poppy the best and hope she is feeling better soon with treatment.
