My diabetic Chihuahua fears needles. How can I give insulin?

The best things for diabetic dogs to eat are food items low in carbohydrates. Aim for food with higher protein and fat. As far as insulting goes, anywhere under the skin is okay but I aim for a loose area of skin such as between the shoulders. Most importantly, if the dog doesn't eat, don't give the insulin . I know giving injections is daunting but I bet you are already doing a wonderful job. I like to use the skin behind the neck or between the shoulder blades. Pinch it up to make a "tent". Stick the needle in the center of that tent and parallel with the body. If you are using an insulin needle, you could be able to go all the way to the hub. Afterwards, the fur shouldn't be wet in that area. If it is then you may be putting it in the hair and not the skin. If you are unsure, you could always schedule an appointment at your vet clinic for someone to WATCH you do it so they can give you any helpful hints on what to do differently. If they don't have a time available for when the actual insulin is due to be given, just ask them to put some saline in the syringe and you can inject that for the demostration. I hope this helps!

The diabetes will require twice daily insulin injections. A proper diet can help decrease the insulin dose needed to control it but it is not enough to stop it all together. There are a lot of good anti inflammatory prescription products that are safe for diabetics that your vet can prescribe. A good natural option is adding glucosamine and chondrotin supplements such as cosequin or see if your vet has a therapy laser that can help

Yes, he should get some insulin now. The usual starting dose is about ¼ unit per pound of body weight. Thus, a 20 lb. dog would start at 5 units; 40 lb. at 10 units, and so on. So at 29 pounds, he should get about 7 units of insulin. Check his glucose again in a few hours and see where he is to make sure he's not getting too low. If he does get really low, you can help bring it back up by giving some honey or Karo syrup.

25 ml is an incredibly large dose of insulin, and I’m assuming you mean 25 units. if she’s eating normally and she is prescribed to receive insulin now, you should give it at the prescribed dose. I’m not sure how the spinal problem was diagnosed but Tramadol May help with any pain associated with that, so again, if this is a prescription given by her doctor I would go ahead and give that medication. Panting can definitely be a sign of pain, so I would use pain medications that have been prescribed for her and see if she improves. You should also also ask your veterinarian about whether gabapentin might be a good pain medication for her, as it frequently helps with pain that is neurologic in origin. if she does not improve after receiving her medications I’d recommend seeking emergency care, as difficulty breathing may be the sign of a serious and new problem for her.
