Why is my 15-year-old dog huffing, gagging, and clearing her throat?

I would recommend having her examined by a veterinarian so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. Hello. Coughing & gagging is pretty indicative of tracheobronchitis, or kennel cough, but in a 14 year old dog, I would be concerned about heartworm disease, heart failure, lung disease, tracheal collapse or bronchitis. So, there are many things that can cause a cough such as this. Only a good examination by your veterinarian, some blood tests & possibly a chest x-ray may be needed to fully diagnose Honey. Chronic heaving / gagging can be caused by problems with larynx or trachea, like laryngeal paralysis, chronic infection / inflammation, laryngeal mass, mass on the neck and more. A visit at your local vets is recommended to establish diagnosis and implement treatment as required. Your vet may want to examine the throat under sedation and/or take radiographs of the neck and chest.

It could be a respiratory infection, it could be a collapsing trachea, it could be kennel cough, or it could be something more serious like heart disease. The symptoms she is experiencing such as trying to clear her throat, may actually be a cough. Coughing and wheezing can be indicative of an upper respiratory infection. She may have something stuck in her throat or her stomach. I would take her to an emergency clinic to be seen especially since her mouth is open and she is gagging. Good luck!

This cannot be treated at home without knowing what is going on. I recommend that you have Milo evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment.
