Can I bathe my dog with a hotspot using anti-bacterial shampoo?

I believe the Triz-chlor 4 product is the one that contains hydrocortisone, a topical steroid. Also, some of the triz-chlor products also have an antifungal component. General anti bacterial shampoo will not have the steroid or the antifungal typically. I don't usually recommend the use of shampoos for dogs with hot spots until they are cleared up. Once they are cleared, however, the medicated shampoos can be helpful if used periodically. Overuse of any shampoo can result in drying the skin out, which can actually irritate Boo resulting in yet another hot spot! A vicious cycle, I know.

The key to combating hot spots is to keep the area clean and dry. Hot spots usually worsen when a dog starts licking the affected areas. You can try putting a cone or shirt on your dog to prevent licking/chewing at the area. You can also try cutting or clipping the hair around the hot spot to help dry the area out. I would stop bathing your dog as moisture can often make a hot spot worse. Severe hot spots need to be addressed by a veterinarian who will give your dog medication to help heal the sores.

A definite NO on the hydrogen peroxide! 1. It is best to shave the hair around the affected area if at all possible. If you don't have clippers you can use scissors to shorten the hair - just be careful you don't cut him. If you can't shave or trim the hair don't stress too much about it. 2. Treatment for hotspot is typically antibiotic therapy and anti-itch medication. I would recommend a topical approach and shave hair from the area. You can use Malacetic conditioning spray, a hydrocortisone spray and apply these twice daily. Hotspots do not spread to humans so do not worry about that as a concern.

You can try shaving it and cleaning it with an antiseptic rinse which will sometimes be enough to make it heal, but if it doesn't resolve I would have Hunter seen by your veterinarian for antibiotics and to confirm that it is a hot spot.
