Can I use Neosporin on my dog's hot spot and cover it with gauze?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Australian Shepherd - miniature | Male | neutered | 6 years and 1 month old | 40 lbs

My dog has a hot spot on his hip, is it safe to cover it with neosporin and gauze so it isn't exposed to other things when he lays on his side??

Applying Neosporin should be fine but I would not cover the area with gauze because the wound needs to breathe in order to heal. If covered the wound could become moist which will make the wound worse. Oftentimes hot spots need to be treated with oral antibiotics, so if the area is not looking improved in the next day or so I would recommend taking your dog in to be checked out by the vet.
