Why is my dog making honking noises and gagging but not throwing up?

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. A honking sounding cough with some gagging is a very typical sign of a condition called collapsing trachea. This is condition of the airway where it collapses down when they try to breath. This would be unrelated to the rake incident, but the rake incident might have stressed Gizmo to the point of an attack or episode where this collapsing trachea has become evident. It usually only flares up when they are stressed or breathing heavy. Another possible cause is kennel cough, once again unrelated to the rake incident but the stress could have caused a flare-up. This causes a hacking cough that is persistent. The other option is that the CPR episode caused trauma or inflammation to the airway or neck. Either way, the best thing to do would be to have a check up with a vet to see if some of these other underlying diseases are present, so you can treat (in terms of kennel cough or irritation of the trachea), or prevent future episodes (in terms of kennel cough). If the coughing has improved, the best thing to do in the mean-time would be to keep Gizmo quiet, comfortable, and rested, and avoid any activities where he would get excited or stressed. If he is still having trouble breathing please go to a vet right away as these episodes can spiral quickly and end up with a blocked airway all together, which can be fatal. Kennel cough, or Bordetella, is a common upper respiratory pathogen that is very contagious between dogs, and usually dogs have a loud goose-honk cough, sometimes ending in coughing up a bit of phlegm. This could be going on with your dogs. Don't worry, it isn't life-threatening, but I usually put these dogs on an antitussive to help alleviate the cough and sometimes an antibiotic. If you don't take them to a vet, the cough should go away in a week or two, but make sure you don't let them socialize with other dogs as they will spread it around.

I'm sorry your dog is having this issue. Kennel cough is typically a dry, almost "honking" cough that can produce a white foamy/mucus substance- they can cough so hard it causes a gag reflex. It usually starts at one time of day and then gets worse and more frequent. Do you have other dogs in your home or neighbor dogs that play with your dog? If so, are they gagging or coughing? Kennel cough is very contagious thus can spread to other dogs in close contact. If you are noticing this, I would contact your vet so they can determine if your dog needs an antibiotic. Some other possibilities for what you are noticing are other respiratory infections, allergies and/or a reverse sneeze or there may be something stuck in your dogs throat (like a grass seed or part of a rawhide chew). Also, some dogs can simply drink too fast especially when it's very hot- this can cause some water to go down "the wrong pipe" and then a gag response. If your dog continues to gag or, especially if the gag becomes more frequent or severe, I would take him back to your vet. Your vet can listen to your dog's lungs for sounds of infection and may want to take a chest X-ray as a next step in working this up. I hope your dog feels better soon!

Based on Zuko's age, it can be a variety of things causing the honking and gagging. Usually a honking cough and gag is trademark for "kennel cough complex" a combination viral and bacterial, upper respiratory infection that dogs can get from socializing with other dogs. This can happen at any age. Other things to think about in a 16 year old dog, would be laryngeal paralysis, which occurs when the muscles of the larynx become paralyzed and the area doesn't remain open as it should. Sometimes it can cause a coughing and hacking when the dog gets excited. It can also sometimes cause the airway to become obstructed. It would be best for Zuko to see his veterinarian and have an examination. The vet can see if Zuko needs any medications for the coughing or even some antibiotics if he has an upper respiratory infection. He can also make sure nothing serious is going on, like a lower respiratory infection, a heart condition, or something cancerous that can occur in an elderly dog. If any of those things are suspected, the vet may recommend Xrays and even lab-work to evaluate Zuko. Best of luck!

Hi, It sounds like your dog may have kennel cough. This sounds like honking cough. I’d recommend an exam with your vet as your dog may need some antibiotics. She’s is likely also contagious so avoid contact with other dogs until she’s better. Hope she feels better soon.

This sounds like he may have an upper respiratory condition. This could be something as common as kennel cough, especially if you take Bakster to dog parks or if he has contact with other dogs. Usually, kennel cough is self-limiting, ie goes away within 3-4 weeks without treatment. It is caused by a number of different virusesw and bacteria, the most well-known being Bordetella bronchiseptica. Treatment is only necessary if the coughing get s excessive, and/or Bakster gets a fever or otherwise appears ill. You should take Bakster to a vet for an exam if he shows any signs of breathing problems, lethargy, not eating and/or drinking. Treatment for upper respiratory disease consists of cough medicine and antibiotics if indicated.

Hi, it could be that Benson has kennel cough and it is something he will overcome with time and supportive care like making sure he is comfortable, warm and eating smalla mount of food little and often. He might also benefit of some antiflammatories. However to be sure that Benson has kennel cough, I would ring your vet and have him checked over.
