Why is my dog's bark hoarse and weak after anesthesia and surgery?

The tube may have irritated his throat. This is actually common, just like when people have anesthesia. Typically it resolves rather quickly. This could have various causes, the most common one would be an infection with kennel cough which can cause excessive coughing which in turn can make the dog hoarse and so diminish her bark. There are more serious causes such as laryngeal paralysis, a vocal chord swelling or tumor and other conditions that make it hard for the vocal chords to vibrate and make the correct sound. mechanical interference such as an ingested and stuck foxtail, piece of bone , etc. which can cause an abscess in that region. Trauma and nerve damage, hypothyroidism and autoimmune conditions can also change the bark. So, you can see that this is a complicated subject. Your vet is trained to properly examine your dog and diagnose your dog's condition. Depending on the cause, medications may be indicated, rest, or surgery (in case of a tumor or abscess). An appointment with your vet will be the best.

IT is a possibility, although usually there is no long term effect and the symptoms seems to disappear within a few days to a few weeks. if it happens just with food and doesn't seem to bother him otherwise, i would not worry too much about it at the moment.

If Cooper had general anesthesia for a dental cleaning it could take 24 hours or more to recover from anesthesia. He may have been given different medications than in the past. The trachea and back of the throat can be irritated by the endotracheal tube and cause coughing or reverse sneezing. I would recommend calling the veterinarian who performed the procedure and expressing your concerns. If they are not open and you feel Cooper is in distress, having difficulty breathing, or in pain I'd recommend seeing an emergency veterinarian.

I’m wondering if Orcan barked a lot when he was at the kennel and now has a ‘hoarse voice’. This is certainly something that can happen after lots of barking. He should improve in a few days. If not you should check in with your vet.

Yes, persistent barking can cause a dog to lose their voice temporarily, it should resolve over the next 2-3weeks. If she is coughing or had any difficulty swallowing you should have her checked by your vet

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Matilda! I am not familiar with using a tube in the nose to deliver oxygen and anesthetic gas for dentals or surgery. We use endotracheal tubes down their throats for this. It sounds like Matilda has irritation from the tube most likely or she has an infection. Just make sure she is breathing normally to be sure her heart and lungs are ok. If she has a history of a heart murmur a recheck with your Vet may be the best thing. Irritation from the tracheal tube should resolve on it's own in a week, getting better each day. If she has kennel cough she may need an antibiotic or something to help with the cough. I recommend calling your Vet today to discuss her symptoms and see if they can prescribe something to give her some relief that you can pick it up. They may want to see her first though.
