My dog has hives and a rash. Why is she still lethargic and shaking?

This is probably an allergic reaction due to an insect bite or a plant outside. those reactions tend to resolve within 48 hours without treatment. if the swelling becomes too large or if your dog becomes lethargic, take him to the vet in order to get an antihistamine/steroid injection. from your description at this moment i think he is probably fine, but this can change so monitor him closely.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Even though she could have mange like you suggest, usually this is very itchy. If she is not itchy then that would be unlikely. If this was an allergic reaction it may take a bit longer to get better. I would give this another 48 hours. Sorry to hear about Dexter! It looks like he needs a steroid or other prescription allergy medication, in addition to the antibiotic. He should not need to be on 2 OTC antihistamines to control allergies. Benadryl and Claritin combined may be causing more lethargy. You can clean his ears with an ear wash, ideally obtained from your vet, and soak his paws in Epsom salts. A cool bath with hypoallergenic shampoo may help as well. That swelling is pretty severe on the lips so I would recommend a recheck if you aren’t seeing improvement within 48 hours. Also, if you haven’t already, discuss with your vet about a hypoallergenic diet.

Poor Zara. I would recommend taking her to a veterinarian for a good physical exam. Dogs can have allergic reactions which will cause hives and itchy skin. She might need something stronger to help calm her hives and itchy skin that only a vet can prescribe. Hope that helps

You should call your vet and give him/her an update. If the hives started after giving the antibiotics then your vet may want to switch to a different antibiotic in case it is an allergic reaction to the antibiotics. Your vet may also want to prescribe a corticosteroid to help treat.

Allergies are definitely a possible cause these hives. Allergies are most commonly due to environmental causes (i.e. pollen) and can start suddenly. Benadryl is usually helpful in these cases, so it may be mange. Mange is caused by a microscopic mite that burrows under the skin. This tends to be very itchy. They usually get this from other animals. It's best to have a vet check the skin. They can check for mange and give better treatment for allergies. For now it's best to give him a bath with cool water using a dog shampoo with oatmeal or aloe as an ingredient. I hope that helps and Dozer gets better soon.
