My dog has recurring hives. What are non-steroid home remedies?

That is odd. It may mean that she needs a longer course of steroids and antihistamines. I also recommend to check her for ANY skin masses (both above and below the skin). There is a skin cancer called Mast Cell Tumor which can cause hives. You may also want to discuss checking a CBC with your vet to see if any of her blood cells are abnormal. Unless you go for testing & a subsequent desensitization protocol, we really can not cure allergies. Almost all dogs will react to an allergen with skin symptoms, so your Brooklyn is showing typical signs. If the Benadryl seems to help, you can use it as needed. There are other OTC antihistamines available ( see petplace.com/antihistamine use in dogs ), but some of the best are available through your veterinarian. Apoquel, a pill you give daily, or as needed, and an injection called Cytopoint that will give Brooklyn relief for up to 2 months are now available. Otherwise, minimizing outdoor times when pollen counts are high, regular bathing in an oatmeal based shampoo in cool water, or even just wiping her down immediately after she comes in from outdoors will all help.

Often times depending on the severity of the reaction dogs require more than one dose of Benadryl or other more aggressive medications. I would administer additional Benadryl to Dallas now. If this dose does not improve the hives or he develops any other symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, or rapid breathing I would recommend having Dallas seen by a veterinarian as soon as possible. Poor Osborne! Unless you have already done so, I recommend to take him into the vet to likely get some steroids. Sometimes the immune system needs a combination of antihistamines and steroids for 1-2 weeks to calm down and stop reacting. It’s unusual to see this type of reaction for so long. The doctor may also talk with you about checking a CBC to look for an abnormality in the cells and to check any skin masses he may have for a specific malignant tumor called a Mast Cell Tumor. Allergies are definitely a possible cause these hives. Allergies are most commonly due to environmental causes (i.e. pollen) and can start suddenly. Benadryl is usually helpful in these cases, so it may be mange. Mange is caused by a microscopic mite that burrows under the skin. This tends to be very itchy. They usually get this from other animals. It's best to have a vet check the skin. They can check for mange and give better treatment for allergies. For now it's best to give him a bath with cool water using a dog shampoo with oatmeal or aloe as an ingredient. I hope that helps and Dozer gets better soon.
