My puppy's hives are gone. Should she still see a vet or change food?

It could be the environment. Have Kane seen by a vet. The vet can diagnose what is causing his hives, and can treat it. I would switch his food, however, as grain free food is not good for dogs. Vets are seeing an increase in dilated cardiomyopathy in dogs fed grain free food, and the FDA is investigating that link. Grain allergies are actually very rare. I'd put Kane on a food with grains from a brand such a Hill's Science Diet, Purina ProPlan, Royal Canin, or Iams. I hope this helps!

I would try hills z/d ultra or royal canin anallergenic (an even more restricted version). Ensure also she is not receiving any additional treats, flavored tablets, bones, table scraps or raiding any garbage bins. She may also require prescription medication to resolve the current flare up. A home prepared diet may be an option but would have to be formulated with the help of an expert nutritionalist and can only comprise of novel ingredients (foods she has never eaten before such as kangaroo/venison/sweet potato etc - these are very difficult to supplement sufficiently and are very expensive to maintain in the long term)

Glad to hear she is doing so well! With full resolution of her symptoms this indicates the condition is food triggered and you have options of either maintaining her on royal canin anallergenic/hypoallergenic (with or without a few treats - try a new ingredient no sooner than once every 2 weeks and remove if any symptoms return) or trying to transition her onto alternative, sensitive diet (should be a food based on a small number of ingredients and 'fixed formula' - ie not one which is made from different ingredients for each batch - those based on rabbit/venison/ostrich/sweet potato etc can be successful). The risk is when changing diets is that she may relapse - in severe cases with complete resolution of signs then maintaining the successful diet would be my preferred option - this is a high quality, balanced diet and perfectly ok to feed lifelong

It’s hard to say what is exactly going on here but it does look very inflamed and possibly infected. If thenlesionnhas been there more than 2 days and/or is getting worse and is irritating to Doja I would recommend having it looked at by your veterinarian. She may need antibiotics to help it clear up. As far as food is concerned, I generally recommend Hills, Purina, Royal Canin, Iams or Eukanuba. As you've experienced, diet changes can certainly cause some changes in stool volume, and for some dogs, can cause a bit of vomiting and diarrhea. When it comes to the countless brands of dog food on the market today, it's overwhelming to pick one for your pup. I recommend brands that have been formulated by a board-certified veterinary nutritionist, are manufactured in their own facility (less cross-contamination that facilities that manufacture numerous formulations), conduct AAFCO feeding trials, and meet WSAVA guidelines. When it comes down to it, the brands that meet those criteria include Hill's Science Diet, Purina, Royal Canin, Eukanuba, and Iams. As a result, I would recommend switching Lilly over to the Science Diet puppy food. Just remember that anytime you switch foods, be sure to do so by gradually mixing the old and new foods together over a 5-7 day period. I hope that everything goes well!

Good on you for doing this! Trusty needs a puppy formulated food still, and brands I recommend include Royal Canin, Hill's Science Diet, Purina ProPlan, and Iams. I personally feed my dogs Iams and they love it. Start the switch now, and do it slowly to avoid GI upset. Best of luck.
