What if my dog was accidentally hit in the penis but seems okay?

Thank you for providing a picture of Harley's penis area. Yes, this does look normal, it should be contained within the penile sheath normally. You did the right thing by apply a cold compress to help it return to the sheath, and I would not be concerned unless his penis becomes stuck outside the sheath again. If that happens again, try the same method but if it remains stuck outside the sheath for longer than 30 minutes, he will need to see a vet immediately. It becomes an emergency at the point because leaving it that way can lead to constricting of the blood flow causing a larger engorgement of the penis, necrosis (dead tissue), and potential damage to the urethra. Keep him in a quiet room, use some cold packs to reduce the inflammation, if present (do not use ice directly to the part) and if you feel confident try to replace the penis in its protect position using some vaseline cream. Your dog may have been kicked or had a traffic accident. Such extensive bruising is either caused by trauma or a coagulation problem (e.g. caused by rodenticide or disease). This is severe enough to warrant a visit at a pet ER for an exam. If this is caused by trauma there may be more internal injury and it would also be painful. If it is caused by a coaguation problem your dog will need medication to counteract this so he does not bleed to death. Please take him to a vet or Pet ER now.

It is common for the penis to be exposed when a male is humping, but if it becomes too enlarged, they can have a problem with the penis not being able to slide back in the prepuce (the skin covering the penis). This is called paraphymosis. It can be a significant problem and can result in damage to the penis and pain. Normally, we will recommend using a sterile lubricant along the penis to get it to slide back in the prepuce. If the penis stays out of the prepuce it can become damaged. Since you can seen blood associated with Pico's paraphymosis, I would recommend having a veterinarian examine him to make sure no other treatment is needed. Good luck! I hope that was helpful. It is more likely to be a bruise - fractures are very rare and extremely painful. Monitor for continued bleeding or any difficulty urinating which would indicate the need for immediate veterinary attention. Encourage him to drink fluids in order to keep the system flushed out and reduce the risk of any blood clots become lodged

It's a little difficult to tell for sure, but I wonder if Charlie had a persistent penile frenulum. It is a band of tissue that runs along the underside of the penis and attaches near the tip of the penis. That will cause the penis to curve. Normally we recommend surgically cutting the frenulum. I have not had one rupture on its own. They do not typically reattach after surgically cutting them. I would recommend having your veterinarian examine it to make sure that it was a persistent penile frenulum and see if anything else needs to be done about it. In the meantime, I would recommend trying to keep Charlie from licking at it and prevent any humping. If you are unable to stop the bleeding, then he may need to be examined tonight. Good luck! I would be suspicious that he got hit by something (like a car) from what you are describing. If he cannot stand, or barely stands and has no pain, then it could be a lower spinal cord injury. Blood coming from the penis usually indicates an injury to the penis or the urethra. Considering both of these problems could be serious and get much worse, it's best to take him to the vet as soon as you can. It doesn't appear to be an emergency at this time, so you may be able to wait until normal business hours if he is otherwise eating, drinking and acting normal.
