Why is my dog's penis saggy and bruised? Should I go to the vet?

Thank you for providing pictures of your dog's penis! That is not normal at all, and he could have a severe infection or may have injured his penis. I'm very concerned by the appearance of it, especially the purplish bruised area. It looks very swollen, and in my opinion he needs veterinary care now. Please take him into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. The information to reach that vet is found on a clinic's answering machine or website.

It is more likely to be a bruise - fractures are very rare and extremely painful. Monitor for continued bleeding or any difficulty urinating which would indicate the need for immediate veterinary attention. Encourage him to drink fluids in order to keep the system flushed out and reduce the risk of any blood clots become lodged

There are a couple of things this could be causing this to happen to Bruzer. It could be that he has an erection, and the penis is swollen and the tip is out because he is aroused. He could also be suffering from paraphimosis, which is an inability to retract the penis back into the sheath. This can quickly turn into an emergency situation, as constricting of the blood flow will lead to a larger engorgement of the penis, necrosis (dead tissue), and potential damage to the urethra. Should you suspect it isn't an erection and it is paraphimosis, I will give you some advice that may help Bruzer. If his penis hasn't been out too long (less than an hour), you can try to put it back yourself. First, thoroughly clean the penis, making sure there is no foreign material (such as fur) that is wrapped around the penis. Take a bag of frozen veggies wrapped in a towel, and apply it to the penis for five minutes at a time to try to reduce the swelling. Packaged peas work very well because they are mobile around the penis. Then apply a lubricant such as KY Jelly onto the penis, and very gently try to move the penis back into the sheath. Very gently try to push the penis back into the sheath, or try to gently pull the sheath over the penis. If this does not work, or if the penis has been outside the sheath for more than 30 minutes to an hour, you will need to take Bruzer into your vet.

It looks like Spanky might have a urethral prolapse in your picture. I would recommend having him examined by a veterinarian right away since the prolapsed tissue could become damaged and it could affect his ability to urinate normally. A veterinarian might place some suture around the penis if they are able to reduce the prolapse, but other times more in-depth surgery is needed.

Hello. Dog's penises should NOT be dripping blood at any time. Also, if his penis is enlarged and red and stuck out this is an emergency right away. Dripping blood can be a concern with a urinary tract infection, polyps, urethral obstruction (stones, etc). prostatic disease (cysts, infection, etc). These all require a vet visit, so I would get him to the vet as soon as possible, especially if he seems painful or cannot pee (postures to pee but nothing comes out). Good luck with Dingo.

Unfortunately from the picture you have provided it looks like Patches has developed PARAPHIMOSIS. This occurs when the glans penis extrudes from the prepuce and over a period of time the swelling caused by irritation, drying out and contact with environmental factors causes the penis to swell to a size which prevents it returning into the prepuce. Due to the change in color I am concerned about blood blow and the safety of the tissues. I would take Patches to the veterinarian immediately for medical intervention. The vet will make Patches for comfortable by eliciting pain relief. The veterinarian team will then attempt several approaches to safely return the penis to the prepuce. This can include lubrication and careful manipulation. The use of medications to reduce the swelling may also be used. Occasionally a small surgical procedure is required to correct the problem. I am so sorry that this has happened to Patches and I hope he receives medical attention soon and this issue is resolved. Best of luck to you both.

I would be suspicious that he got hit by something (like a car) from what you are describing. If he cannot stand, or barely stands and has no pain, then it could be a lower spinal cord injury. Blood coming from the penis usually indicates an injury to the penis or the urethra. Considering both of these problems could be serious and get much worse, it's best to take him to the vet as soon as you can. It doesn't appear to be an emergency at this time, so you may be able to wait until normal business hours if he is otherwise eating, drinking and acting normal.
