My dog is in pain from his hip. Can I give him human painkillers?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered

My dog has issues with his hips, usually I massage them if he has jumped and hurt it and he is fine. He must have hurt it while we were out and I think he is in pain because he is unusually quiet. Is there any human pain killers that are safe to give him until I can get him to a vet?

I am afraid there are no human pain killers that would be safe to give or recommend for a dog that is not in our care, as most NSAIDs available over the counter can have serious side effects if your dog happens to be suffering from liver or kidney problems. The best thing to do is to keep him quiet in a room so he cannot run or jump, and to take him out on a leash only. Pain is usually not so bad when Freddie rests.
