Is it normal for my dog with hip dysplasia to get tired after play?

If he is regularly active and has this issue than that would be concerning he could have some arthritis in his joints due to dysplasia or another conformational abnormality. We can also have heart issue lead to weakness, or neuromusclular disease such as myasthenia gravis. If he is getting very tired every once in awhile after a rare day of lots of activity (say he normally goes on a 20 minute long walk every day, but this weekend he walked for 5 hours and is sore the next day) then this could just be that is is overexerting himself. But what you are describing sounds more concerning and I would recommend a visit to his vet for an examination.

Legally, I am not allowed to give you a diagnosis, but based on the x-rays you posted, I suspect that your vet told you that Sly has significant hip dysplasia and arthritis in both hips. I'm sure that came as a surprise to you since Sly is only showing some limping after resting. Dogs are very stoic and do not show us pain as we would expect. Since you have just started Sly on a glucosamine and chondoitin sulfate supplement, you certainly could wait and see how he does on that, but I suspect you will need to add some additional supplements or medications to resolve his limping, so don't be afraid to talk to your vet about those. We frequently use fish oil, MSM, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, and many other drug combinations for arthritis. I also highly recommend physical rehabilitation and acupuncture. Although we expect our dogs to cry in pain, most dogs with arthritis pain act exactly like Sly and only limp after getting up. For such a young dog, I recommend to have Boogie examined by the veterinarian. Dysplasia is something that tends to get worse over time and if you take appropriate action now, you may be able to avoid or slow this down. He will need an exam and radiographs to begin figuring out your options. At home you can put Boogie on an omega 3 fatty acid supplement for pets. A joint supplement would also help. Lastly, a prescription diet for joint health will also be beneficial but they cannot fix the dysplasia. Hi. Poor Tucker. I'm glad he is already on a joint supplement. Adding in fish oil/omega 3 supplement may be a good idea as well. But for pain management I would recommend seeing a veterinarian for prescription medication. Human otc pain meds are not safe or effective for dogs and Tucker will likely need to be on fairly chronic pain medication as dysplasia is a progressive disorder. There are many options available for dogs with arthritis and dysplasia.

Hip dysplasia means that Chuck's hips have poor conformation resulting in hip joint laxity. Over time this will result in arthritis and pain. Keeping Chuck thin and providing steady exercise such as walking will maintain the muscles that support the hips. This will reduce the development of arthritis. If he is already showing signs of pain please put him on medication so he can continue to be active and maintain his muscle mass. I like to give omega3 supplement in addition to a joint supplement. You may also want to discuss Adequan injections with your veterinarian. They help reduce the damage to the joint cartilage. It's best not to have Chuck do any jumping as this may make the discomfort worse. Absolutely work on getting him to a normal weight if he's heavy as the extra weight is hard on the joints. I'm sorry Sunny has hip dyplasia! That in itself does not cause death directly, but the dog may be put to sleep because they are in so much pain from it. Pain medications can be given to the dog to help with their pain, but please do not give him any human pain medications. Many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. I would have Sunny seen by a vet today or tomorrow. The vet can prescribe medication to help with his pain. I also recommend giving him glucosamine or chondroitin sulfate supplements. They provide the necessary nutrients for cartilage repair and function. Use of them helps relieve some of the symptoms of arthritis, and you can use it in conjuction with pain medications from the vet to help maximize relief from his symptoms.

It's possible he will need pain killers for the rest of his life indeed and those pain killers could give him an excellent quality of life, he could go back to normal as long as he is on them. i would recommend taking him to the vet ASAP in order to get it checked.
