Can I keep feeding my dog Hill's a/d prescription diet long-term?

It definitely is a balanced diet that is safe for long-term use. It is most commonly used in dogs with skin issues or food allergies, so if this is a problem that Kira experiences, it would be a great choice. There are also lots of great foods that are available to you. I have fed my dog Purina Pro-Plan since she was a puppy. She is now 14 and has no health issues! I would discuss the best option with your vet.

If you have been feeding the Hills prescription food, you can always talk to your doctor about continuing this food. Yes, there is a difference between the prescription diets and regular food, but the regular Science Diet food is high quality. It will be less expensive to feed Science Diet sensitive stomach formula than to continue on the prescription food. You could always try a small bag of the regular food, and if Spartacus does not do as well, you could switch back to the prescription diet. Thats funny! Most dogs don't want to eat the Z/D! I don't think they have a food that tastes exactly like the Z/D at non-prescription price but you could try any of the science diet dog foods - all of which are very palatable and she may like. For just a general food, I like science diet adult for dogs over 1. Once she is over 7 years old, I recommend to switch her to the senior diet. It is perfectly safe for her to eat the z/d long term although that would be expensive for you. I hope this helps!

Great question! Because Ohu is a small breed dog, I would recommend feeding him the Hill's Small Paws adult food. It's an excellent food for small breed dogs like Ohu. I do recommend slowly transitioning from his puppy food to his new adult food to avoid stomach upset. To do this, feed him 75% old food, 25% new food for three to four days, then give him 50% old, 50% new. Again feed this mixture for three to four days, then feed him 25% old food, 75% new food. After feeding him this mixture for another three to four days, give him 100% of the new food. If he does have any stomach upset during this time, such as diarrhea, increase the amount of old food and decrease the amount of new food until the diarrhea is resolved, then continue to increase the amount of new food. If your puppy is doing well on this food, I would certainly recommend not switching at this point. If you are concerned about the calorie content for your adult dog, you can calculate her testing energy requirement (body weight in Kg times 30 plus 70) and then divide by the number of kCals per cup of the food to determine how much you should be feeding.

If Snowball is having normal bowel movements and is not vomiting on the Hill's diet then it is likely fine for her. However, Hill's Sensitive Stomach and Skin is not labeled for use in puppies. I'd suspect Snowball is no longer growing at a puppy rate by 10 months old, but it would still be wise to check in with your veterinarian regarding if she can be placed in this adult food at this time.
