My dog's annual blood test shows high lymphocytes. Is it serious?

I can see the results, but I'm unable to see the reference ranges for each value which can vary based on the machine so it's a little difficult to say for certain what these changes could mean. It looks to me like the monocytes and lymphocytes (specific types of white blood cells) are a little low - this could be a stress response which is very normal for a dog having it's blood drawn in the hospital. Some dogs simply lie on the lower end of the reference range as well. I can't think of any disease where low lymphocytes and monocytes in the absence of other changes would be significant, and this would not raise a flag for possible cancer in my mind. Red cell distribution width (RDW) gives an idea of the average size of a red blood cell and mean cell hemoglobin concentration (MCH) tells how much hemoglobin is present in each cell - these parameters are really only significant when there is also anemia or low hematocrit. If you have other concerns you should definitely follow up with your vet - it's always easiest for the doctor who has examined the animal and is familiar with the case to interpret lab results!

Thank you for sharing Millie's bloodwork results. She has VERY high white blood cell counts which may be indicative of a severe infection, autoimmune disease, or even cancer. I would have her evaluated for the underlying cause which may require radiographs, an ultrasound, and or a blood smear evaluation by a pathologist.

Also it would be helpful to see the blood report as reference ranges are different. If Harlow just had routine blood work done and is normal then I wouldn't worry about the results and I would recheck the CBC in 1 month if she is still acting normal. Have a good day!

In looking at the bloodwork you attached, I would not be concerned about the total White Blood Cell value being slightly lower than normal. After the total WBC value, the bloodwork breaks it down into individual white blood cells, like neutrophils and lymphocytes, none of which are too low. In fact, neutrophils, the body's first responders to infection or inflammation, are a little higher than the normal range. White blood cells are the fighters of the immune system, and it appears that Mary still has plenty in case she needs them. There is nothing you can do raise them other than keep her in good health. However, I do see that both BUN and Creatinine are also elevated. This can happen for many reasons, including severe dehydration, kidney insufficiency or failure, kidney infection, among others. These are the more concerning numbers that I see, and I am sure your vet has discussed a plan of action for these values.

If there is no detectable cancer, then the best thing to do here is treat it like an inflammatory condition with steroids +/- antibiotics through your vet. I would also consider an abdominal ultrasound just to be thorough. Elevated WBC's either means infection or inflammation in most cases, especially if cancer is ruled out. Without knowing the whole history of Bingo and what is going on with him it is difficult for me to properly assess these values. If Bingo is acting normally, then none of these values worry me. The ALP is a value found in the liver but can also be found in the bones and muscles and can be seen slightly elevated with arthritis. The globulins can be elevated secondary to dehydration or an infection, but if he is acting normally, I wouldn't get overly concerned due to his WBC being normal. The globulins are part of the Totally serum proteins which is why this value is also elevated. All of his other liver and kidney values look normal which is great. I hope this helps!

Meddy likely is suffering from an infection (elevated white blood cell count). However without a clinical history, signs of apparent illness and for how long the condition has been active, there is no way to pinpoint where the infection is, and a cause. We do not just treat on account of blood test results Her liver parameters are borderline high, so that may or may not be significant or a sign of disease. Anotheer problem may be that this blood was examined in a lab for human medicine and therefore the parameter normals may just be different. Best consult with your veterinary doctor who has given Meddy an exam.
