How to stop my dog from herding and nipping another dog outside?

I am sorry to hear about Loki! Border Collies are highly intelligent dogs that are bred for intensive jobs so it is possible he is bored and trying to entertain himself. I would consider looking into getting him into some classes such as agility if you have the time/they are offered in your area. In the meantime I would look into getting some puzzle feeder toys. Your new heeler will need plenty of mental and physical stimulation or she will likely continue to herd whatever she can - in this case your Pyrenees. I highly recommend daily training sessions, agility training, long runs, trips to the dog park, or some combination thereof. This can be normal behavior for herding breeds as well as with changes in the environment making that behavior stronger. You can try various enrichment activities such as callings, three balls, or increasing your dogs exercise to see if that helps. However given their breed and the current environment it will be difficult to stop the behavior all together. If the aggression escalates I recommend you keep them separated. You could also try working with a trainer one on one with your dog to see if they can identify specific triggers causing this behavior.

That is a natural instinct for a Border Collie to herd or chase cats. You are going to have to do some training to see if you can teach him to ignore the cat. You should definitely teach him the "leave it" command to start as it may be very useful in this situation. Once he has mastered that command than you should have him on a leash while the cat is allowed to roam. Once your dog sees the cat than give him a command, like sit, leave it, etc. If he listens than give him a reward. Gradually let him get closer to the cat once he seems more relaxed and not paying attention to the cat. With persistence and patience, you may be able to teach him to leave the cat alone. I do not recommend leaving them unsupervised and make sure the cat has an area to escape at all times. Border Collies are a herding breed so this may be difficult to break this habit. When you give him what he wants after nipping you, you are rewarding his behavior and so he will keep doing it. Ignore him, correct him or distract him. You may also look into a professional trainer which may be your best option. You may also read some books about dog training and behavior. This could be a natural herding behavior for her breed. When she does it I would tell her no and try to give her a toy instead. You can also use a water bottle and spray her while saying no when she does it to help teach her not to do that. These behaviors can be frustrating and difficult to "out train" since it is part of their breed instincts to nip like this. I hope this helps!

I'm sorry to hear that this happened with Loki! I would not recommend attempting to discipline him for this behavior after the fact, as it won't help and will only make him more agitated. If he becomes worked up (barking and growling) when dogs walk past the house and is able to jump the fence, he should never be in the yard unless you are with him and he's on-leash. You can work on this problem by taking treats outside with you, and giving Loki a treat every time he sees another dog walk by. Over time, he will learn to look at you for his treat rather than barking when he sees a dog.
