Dog in heat: swollen, whimpering, struggling to pee. Is it serious?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labradoodle | Female | 44 lbs

My dog is in her first season, 8-9 days and her genitals are very swollen. She also appears to be in some discomfort trying to urinate, she is squatting a lot with either no pee or very little. Then she goes but is whimpering. She is constantly cleaning herself

It is possible that her genitals are so swollen that her urethra is obstructed by the swelling. I suggest you take Millie to your veterinarian for an exam to make sure she is ok and does not have a UTI as well. Please do so ASAP.
