The treatment requiring 3 injections will kill a greater number of adult heartworm and is generally considered safer than the 2 injection treatment because worms die slower. The additional injection may be at additional cost. You would need to confirm costs with your veterinarian since they can differ by geographic location and the weight of the patient.

There are several possibilities here: 1) you pick off the ticks with tweezers and drop them in a glass with rubbing alcohol to kill them. Carefully grab the tick as close as possible with tweezers and pull straight up. If the head stays in the skin it is not a problem, evntually the dog's skin will reject it. 2) you can get some "Bravecto" or Nexguard from your vet. It is a chew that will, when given to the dog, kill all parasites on the dog including ticks. You may still have to pull off the dead ticks. But Bravecto and Nexguard will keep the dog form getting attacked by fleas, ticks and mites for a few months. Costs vary from vet to vet and area to area, so the best would be to call your vet and/or the vets in your area and inquire about their fees. The shelter where you picked up the dog should actually tell you which vet will remove the stitches for free,

Melarsomine is the only medication that can kill adult heartworms, and there unfortunately is not a less expensive option. Sometimes veterinarians will discuss what is commonly known as a 'slow kill' method, but in reality this means starting an antibiotic to weaken the heartworms and then giving a monthly preventative and waiting for the heartworms to die on their own. Some veterinarians do not recommend this due to the potential to develop resistant heartworm infections. If Waylon is not symptomatic this might be an option. He would be at risk for developing side effects from the dying heartworms for 1-2 years and exercise restriction is recommended during that time. You should talk to your veterinarian and ask about all of your different options, and you could also try contacting rescue groups in your area to see if there are any that could help with heartworm treatment.
