Should I adopt a heartworm positive dog? Is it curable or treatable?

If you are prepared to go through with the treatment and aftercare this dog will require and understand that there are rare complications that that could be fatal, then I say go for it. I've been through heartworm treatment with one of my dogs and it added several wonderful years to his life.

The biggest issue with a heartworm positive dog is she will need strict rest throughout her treatment especially after she is given the medication to kill the adult worms. She should have x-rays of her chest as well as blood and urine testing prior to starting treatment to determine the extent of her disease. Because she will need to be kept quiet, it may make introductions with your current dog easier. She should be used to a crate coming the the shelter, so she will be able to kept separate. This will allow them both time to get used to each other. You can allow them to meet on neutral territory and keep them separate in the home until they are more comfortable with each other. A "low positive" may mean a low adult heartworm burden. The preventive is to kill any immature heartworm (microfilariae). The doxycyline is to kill the wolbachia bacteria. This is an organism that lives within the heartworm parasite as a symbiont. This portion of the treatment lasts 30 days after which medication is given via injection to kill adult heartworm. Hello, & thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. We usually do a test where the antigen to heartworms can be quantified using a very small amount of blood. There are many companies that make these tests & they usually are less than $40 to run. The test only takes 10 minutes & shows either positive or negative. If a dog has a significant number of heartworms, sometimes you can see them directly in a drop of blood under a microscope. If the test comes back positive, depending on the overall health of your pet, we start therapy first with a round of the antibiotic Doxycycline, then we use a form of medical grade arsenic, injected into a muscle, either 2 or 3 times over a short course of time. This will kill any adult heartworm that are in the heart & in the vasculature in the lungs. It sounds pretty intense, but most dogs come through very, very nicely. I hope this helps. Take care.

The heartworms will kill her if you don't attempt treatment. At least with the treatment there is a chance she will survive. The vet can do a "slow kill" protocol and uses the immiticide injections over a longer period of time. That is what we do here in the States when we have a dog with advanced stage heartworm disease. In depends on how severe the infestation is, but with the new treatment protocol most dogs recover eventually, it may take a very long time to finish the treatment course if the dog is heavily infested and you need to be very strict with physical activity as any excess in activity may put his life in danger as long as he is not cleared of this disease.

There is really only one treatment for adult heartworm disease which is given by injection. The other method is just continuing to use preventative medications so they don’t continue to be bitten and infected with more heartworms. The hope is over time the worms will die. This may take years and the worms will continue to do damage to the body while they exist. Heartworm disease is complicated and devastating and the treatment does have the potential for side effects.
