I also recommend to have Sparky's stool checked for worms in case that was a round worm. For that parasite, pets are often given bolus dewormings since people can get that worm. The dog should be heartworm tested and then started on a prevention, if negative. Heartgard, Interceptor, and Sentinel are all oral medications that work well with preventing heartworms. You should also treat him with a flea/tick prevention. I like oral NexGard, Bravecto, or Credellio instead of the topical spot on solutions.

Heartgard and interceptor are equal. It is personal preference for your dog and you. Heartgard is a larger, chunky chewable which some smaller dogs may not like to where interceptor is small pile that can be hidden in a treat and raiser to give pickier dogs. Bravecto is a better product as it is a pill form and last for 3 months but frontline is a topical that last for a single month

If you like the idea of an oral product better, I like Trifexis (it’s another all in one product). Sometimes though the pets can smell the Trifexis and they won’t eat it. Tri-Heart is generic Heartgard and is just as effective. I am not sure why your vet won't prescribe it for you. You cannot buy any heartworm prevention over the counter so you will need a prescription. I suggest you bring your dog to one of the VETCO vaccine clinics at your local Petco stores (see schedule below).
