My dog has head tremors after Dramamine. Is this a side effect?

While dramamine won't cause harm for a dog, it is not the most effective solution. If the episodes occur when Dawn is awake, then I would recommend having a veterinarian evaluate her. If she is having head tremors, it is important to determine if they are benign or seizure based (which can occur even if the rest of her body is not involved). Poor Maxine, it sounds like she is very sensitive to medication which can commonly occur. Metronidazole can be hard on any dog's system especially depending on dose. In an ideal world you would speak to the prescribing vet before stopping the medication as they know the story regarding why they have prescribed it. But if this is not possible we must use best evidence, and in this case it would seem considering her history that the drug is causing the head tremors. These could get worse the more she takes the medication. Some year in her bottom is not going to do her serious harm immediately and there are other treatment options. I would try and speak to your vet as soon as you can but in the mean time don't give any more medication. If her condition starts to deteriorate take her to an emergency vet in case there is something else going on. When you speak to your vet make sure and explain how sensitive she has been in the past and with trial and error​ you will find a way to treat her.

I'm sorry to hear that Cooper gets car sick - that's no fun for anyone! Hands down, the best anti-nausea medication for dogs is a prescription medication called Cerenia. Benadryl is an antihistamine that can be mildly sedating for some dogs, but it very rarely helps with vomiting and nausea from motion sickness. Children and adult Dramamine have different active ingredients. The dimenhydrinate in the adult form of Dramamine can be helpful with motion sickness in dogs, but it is generally less effective than Cerenia and has more possible side effects. Likewise, at only 10 pounds, Cooper is simply too tiny to be able to accurately split a Dramamine tablet into an appropriate dose. I would strongly recommend asking your vet about prescribing Cerenia. I hope that everything goes well!

I personally think it would be better to skip the medication or potentially use a different prescription medication like Cerenia since Dramamine can affect behavior. You should check in with your vet however to see what they would prefer.

If you can call Piper's name and she stops, and if she seems to be her normal self otherwise it's possible that she is having an idiopathic head tremor. The cause of the tremors is unknown but they occur in many breeds and usually are not harmful. If she has had any seizures, if she seems disoriented, or if she seems painful I'd recommend seeing your veterinarian.
