My dachshund puppy has head bobbing & balance issues. What to do?

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund miniature | Male | neutered | 3 months and 4 days old | 7 lbs

I was just wondering if and how soon I should get my 3 month old dachshund in to a neurologist. He had 2 episodes about 2 weeks apart where one minute he was fine and the next his head was bobbing back and forth uncontrollably every time he picked it up, and when he sat up he had no balance and his whole body was bobbing back and forth. He can barely stand or walk when this happens, and he is very tired. It usually last a night, and when he wakes up the next morning he is perfectly fine.

Poor guy. I would absolutely think about. Neurologist consult but the first thing that should be done is an exam by your regular vet and bloodwork/urinalysis done to rule out any other detectable underlying cause. Plus the neurologist will want to have you referred by your regular vet in order to see Oskar. Mainly what we want to rule out first is any underlying liver issue (hepatic encephalopathy or a liver shunt). Liver problems can for the most part be treated through your regular vet.

I would recomend first taking Oskar to his regular vet for an exam if you haven't already. They can help advise you and may be able to run some diagnostic tests prior to seeing the neurologist. Some specialists may be referral based only meaning that you have to be sent by his primary doctor. But certainly get him evaluated of these episodes continue or increase in frequency. This is certainly a concerning behavior. I would recommend recording it if you are able to. This will help the vet better understand what is going on. If you have not already had Oskar evaluated by your regular vet, I would start there. It may be something that they can diagnose and mange without seeing a specialist. If however you prefer to see the specialist or your regular vet has already evaluated Oskar then you can set up a referral to a neurologist. He may be having a mild seizure, have a problem with his cervical (neck) spine or have a metabolic issue like hypoglycemia. Keep a record of when he has these episodes and if they start becoming more frequent get him in to the vet as soon as you can. Hopefully this is something simple and Oskar will out grow it. So, potential serious concerns would be 1. poisoning (ie antifreeze, pot, chemicals, rotten carcasses, etc.) 2. seizures (dogs get epilepsy and it commonly presents in puppies 3. metabolic issue like a liver shunt can cause neurologic symptoms 4. trauma to the brain like being hit by a car. Any neurologic symptoms are very serious and I would take him to an emergency veterinarian for a full workup.

Why is my unvaccinated puppy vomiting, dizzy, and losing balance?

Hi. This is definitely not normal. I would be concerned she has episodes of low glucose, a neurologic condition she may have been born with, or another possibility is an infection that is affecting her neurologic system. I recommend she get a full blood panel, try another food to entice her to eat more, and have a full neurologic exam done by your veterinarian or a neurologic specialist. Having none of her shots does put infection high on the list.

Why is my dog losing balance and confused? How to diagnose ataxia?

Hello. Cerebellar ataxia can occur from developmental abnormalities, brain infections, a lesion in the spinal cord, encephalitis, cancer & other degenerative causes. Your veterinarian can refer you to a veterinary neurologist who can help to isolate where the lesion is ( based on history & clinical signs ) & confirm the problem with an MRI. No need to do a DNA test. Since you are located in California, I am sure there are board certified neurologists within driving distance, or if you are close to a college of veterinary medicine, they will definitely be able to help you. You do want to follow up with this as based on the final diagnosis, treatment may be readily available to allow Bobby to live a long, healthy life. My dog is tilting head, losing balance, and falling. Is he sick?

That is very unusual. There are several things that come to mind that could cause the signs. Ingesting toxins, an inner ear infection, stroke or viral infections are all possible. Anytime a pet appears off-balance you should be concerned and I recommend to take Nigel in to see a veterinarian right away. The doctor will need to perform a few basic tests to try to figure out the cause of the imbalance. Treatment will depend on the cause. Best of luck and I hope this is helpful. My dog is lethargic, shaky, and losing balance. What should I do?

Synis experiencing very general symptoms of disease, these symptoms could fit almost any internal condition, maybe he is suffering from nausea due to a gastrointestinal disease and maybe he is in pain, from the symptoms described it's very hard to know. i would recommend taking him to the vet as soon as possible in order to get him checked, if he doesn't show any other obvious symptoms during the examination, a blood test and possibly an ultrasound will be needed in order to try and find out what is wrong with Syn.

Why is my dog acting weird with dilated pupils and head bobbing?

Poor girl. This breed is prone to several disorders that can cause this including: hepatic encephalopathy, hydrocephalus, a brain tumor, or even just vestibular disease. I would highly recommend taking her in to your vet for further testing (ie Bloodwork +/- xrays) as soon as possible. I hope that your fur baby I able to become stable soon!
