My dog has a hard, purplish lump on his hind leg armpit. What is it?

This looks like a mass in the skin, it could be a reaction to infection, a benign tumour such as a skin tag or a cancerous tumour. I would get it tested by your vet to decide the bedt course of action.

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. From the picture, I would suspect this to be one of two things as first suspicion. A hemangioma (benign cutaneous mass) or a hemangiosarcoma (malignant mass). Most of the time, the hemangioma will turn into a hemangiosarcoma if not removed. I would have this looked at because the sooner you remove this the better. This could also be a different type of mass but this is my suspicion. This is most of the time differentiated with a test called a fine needle aspirate which is easy, cheap and pain-free. Sometimes, a biopsy is required for a diagnosis. Have Panzer evaluated by your veterinarian to have this test performed to try to sort out what the diagnosis is so that the best course of action can be determined. I am sorry to hear about Rocco. This looks like it could potentially be a tumor that has a small ulceration or wound. We can have tumors that are benign and do not spread/cause other problems, but others are aggressive and should be removed. I would recommend bringing Rocco into the vet for an exam. Your vet may try to get some cells from the tumor to examine under the microscope in order to determine the type/behavior of the growth and determine if it should be surgically removed or if it can just be monitored.

There is a potential for any lump to be serious, which is why I would recommend bringing Kola into the vet to have it examined. Lumps on dogs can be caused by cysts, abscesses, benign tumors, or malignant tumors. The vet can perform a test called a fine needle aspirate on it. To do this, the vet sticks a small needle into the lump to get a sample of it's cells, and examines the cells on a slide under a microscope. It's usually painless to the animal, and relatively quick to perform. I would have Kola seen by a vet on Monday or Tuesday.

The picture you posted does not look like a pimple, so I am worried that it is actually a mass. Anytime a new mass is noticed, I always recommend having it evaluated to see what it is and if anything needs to be done about it. Unfortunately, we often can't tell anything about a mass by just looking at it. Your vet can perform a simple test called a fine needle aspirate where they use a small needle to collect some cells from the mass, then look at them under the microscope. They may even need to send the cells to the lab for a pathologist to examine them, so we know what the mass is. If it is benign, you might not need to do anything about the mass at all, but if they see cells that worry them, they might recommend removing the mass. If the area is infected, then your veterinarian may prescribe oral or injectible antibiotics to resolve it. Good luck! I hope that was helpful.
