My senior boxer has a hard belly lump & mucusy poop. What's wrong?

Pet's info: Dog | Boxer | Female | spayed | 11 years and 4 months old | 70 lbs

My 11 year old female boxer has large hard bulge in abdomen extending mostly to her left side, passing small amounts of mucusy stringy poop. She is drinky lots and urinating properly. No vomiting. This has been going on for a couple of weeks

I would have Abby seen by a vet for this bulge which could be a mass. Unfortunately in senior dogs, there is always a chance a mass could be malignant. It could be compressing her intestines and colon leading to small amounts of poop being passed. Any suspicious masses should be examined by the vet. The vet can perform a test called a fine needle aspirate on it. To do this, the vet sticks a small needle into the mass to get a sample of it's cells, and examines the cells on a slide under a microscope. It's usually painless to the animal, and relatively quick to perform. I would have Abby seen by a vet first thing on Monday to have this mass examined and diagnosed so it can be treated.

That looks to be a mass. A mass is a collection of cells which can be benign (inflammation, benign tumor) or a malignant tumor. The only way to know what it is is for your vet to sample it. Typically we start with a needle aspiration for cytology to the lab. In most instances this can help diagnose whether a mass needs to be removed surgically. In some instances needle sampling will not yield a diagnosis and then the options would be removal with biopsy or monitoring. If the vet could feel something there is a chance it might be a mass, but it would need to be tested to determine if it is cancerous. At the same time it could be an issue with the anal gland such as an abscess. I would wait and see the results if the xray and try and not panic about it in the mean time. It is always best to get to the bottom of these things. Best of luck.

Poor Storm! It's hard to say for sure what might be causing this without seeing him. From what you describe, I would be concerned that he may have a testicular infection or even testicular cancer. If his belly looks swollen, this is often a sign of fluid in the abdomen, which can be caused by cancer, liver failure, heart disease, or internal bleeding. Anytime a new mass is noticed, I always recommend having it evaluated to see what it is and if anything needs to be done about it. Unfortunately, we can't tell anything about a mass by just looking at it. Your vet can perform a simple test called a fine needle aspirate where they use a small needle to collect some cells from the mass, then look at them under the microscope. They may even need to send the cells to the lab for a pathologist to examine them, so we know what the mass is. If it is benign, you might not need to do anything about the mass at all, but if they see cells that worry them, they might recommend removing the mass. Since Asia's mass may be along her mammary glands, they may also recommend spaying her if her mass is affected by hormones. Good luck! I hope that was helpful and that Asia is fine. My senior dog has belly lumps and is peeing blood. Is it serious?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Blood in the urine can be observed with things like urinary tract infections, urinary tract stones and even urinary tract tumors. The masses under the skin can be due to a benign or malignant growth. Both of these conditions can be linked or be completely separate issues. A urinalysis and urine culture can be performed to check the urine. Abdominal imaging may also be recommended. The lumps could be benign or malignant growths. This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. I recommend that you have her evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. I am really hoping for something benign. My senior dog's belly is bloated and she's throwing up. What's wrong?

Since Timberblynn is an older girl, I would be worried about the possibility of some type of cancer causing her clinical signs. She may have a mass causing enlargement of one or many of her abdominal organs, such as her liver, and leading to her feeling sick and vomiting. I recommend making an appointment with your veterinarian to have her seen. Your vet can perform an exam and see if he/she can palpate any masses or organ abnormalities. Your vet may also recommend bloodwork and/or imaging to see any changes in her abdomen. In the meantime, you can try offering her a bland diet suck as boiled chicken and rice, however I feel strongly that she should see your veterinarian. I hope this is helpful!

Please, monitor Charles for signs of diarrhoea and vomiting and if he does start to vomit or pass loose stools, take him to your local vets for an appointment. However, if Charles's stomach looks bloated or he starts dry heaving, you should take him to your vets as an emergency - these symptoms will be consisted with stomach bloat / twist.

Why does my Boxer have a new, non-red bump on his stomach area?

Hello If possible a photograph of this lump would be helpful. It could be a lipoma (a harmless fatty tumor) but Boxers are known for developing mast cell tumors on their skin. Those types of tumors need to be removed as they can cause issues with the GI tract and even anaphylactic reactions.

My senior dog has hard lumps, feels hot, and is tired. What's wrong?

i am afraid these could be benign or malignant tumors. Since Nealy is an older dog, this is not uncommon. Lipomas (fatty tumors, usually benign, they can actually be hard) or mast cell tumors come to mind when looking at your photos. It could also be a very extreme allergic reaction to possibly a shampoo at the groomers. 1) do not panic 2) make an appointment with your veterinarian for an exam. He will likely want to take a so-called FNA (Fine Needle Biopsy) where he takes a small amount of tissue through an injection needle, puts this on a glass plate and looks at it under the microscope. This will give your vet an idea what he is dealing with. He may also send this material to a lab to be examined. Once you and dyour veterinarian know what type of mass you are dealing with , you can discuss treatment plans.
