My Samoyed puppy is losing hair. Is it a rabies vaccine side effect?

Malassezia which is a yeast is typically treated with antifungal medications, but in low amounts can be successfully treated with liquid antifungal ear cleaning solution prescribed by your veterinarian. If Emma is loosing hair, you may want to revisit with your veterinarian to determine if the hair loss is due to staph or yeast infections you mentioned. Sometimes these infections can cause itching and scratching near the site of infection which can lead to hair loss. I wouldn't expect shedding or molting to occur this early on- around 6 month to a year you may expect her first molting. I hope this helps!

A vaccine is not needed here. They may have mange or other infection (bacterial or fungal). Ideally, they should be seen by a veterinarian to diagnose the cause. Any treatment will depend on the diagnosis. They will likely require ongoing care until symptoms resolve.

Poor Mukku! This could be an allergic reaction the vaccine or it could be unrelated. Due to the potential for a reaction, I recommend to have him checked by his veterinarian. He may get an anti-inflammatory as well as a medicated shampoo. I hope he starts feeling better quickly!

Hi and thanks for posting. Lexi may have had a small abscess from the vaccine that drained and is now healing or it may be a location reaction to the vaccine. It is hard to say without examining Lexi first. If your veterinarian has told you it was from the vaccine, then I would follow your veterinarian's instructions for care of the wound. If it looks red, inflamed, has discharge coming from the area, or changes in any way, it may be infected and will need a reassessment by your veterinarian. Not sure what is causing this and I would advise that you take Sam in for a vet evaluation. Many different things can cause hair loss including external parasites (fleas, ticks, mites, etc), bacterial skin infection, allergies, endocrine/hormone problems (thyroid, etc), contact irritants, etc. Your vet can evaluate Sam and then advise some diagnostic or treatment plan for Sam. Diagnostics may include some skin tests including a skin scrape, fungal culture, blood work, etc. to try to determine what is going on. Your vet may even advise a referral to a dermatologist in your area if they cannot determine what is going on. Once a diagnosis is made, a treatment plan can be recommended to treat this condition. I will just say that this pattern of hair loss is not typical so I am very interested to know what is going on.

You are describing what sounds like some type of folliculitis, inflammation of the hair follicles. This is commonly a secondary result of a bacterial infection to the skin atop the area where you are seeing affected follicles. Superficial skin infections are common findings in young puppies such as Marshall. Often times in dogs with black hair they can go unnoticed until more severe secondary findings are noted. If this is the case, Marshall will likely require some antibiotics and potentially some topical therapeutics to get things right again. It's possible that a vaccine reaction could have played a role, but this would not be a common manifestation of a reaction to any vaccine that I am familiar with using. Hope this helps.

Aloha! The only way to know if Lani has mange is for a veterinarian to do a skin scrape on her to look for the mites responsible for mange. Once that has been diagnosed, then the appropriate medication will be Rx. Keep in mind there are two types of mange: demodex (non itchy with hairloss) and sarcoptes (itchy with hairloss). Do not apply any medication to Lani unless directed to do so by your veterinarian first! I hope this has helped!
