This sounds like it could be a hot spot or superficial bacterial skin infection. Most of the time hot spots are treated with antibiotics and sometimes some prescription topical medications. I'd recommend making an appointment with your veterinarian.

Hello. It is very hard from the picture to determine exactly what is going on, however based on the description, it sounds like Rambo could have a "pyoderma" or "hot spot". It could also be other conditions however a hot spot is most likely in that region. These tend to get much bigger very quickly, and often require medications (antibiotics and pain management) to heal. I recommend having Rambo to the vet to have it checked out.

Unfortunately, there is no way for you to treat Rocky Road's sore without seeing a vet. It's infected if there is pus and that requires antibiotics to treat which are available by prescription only from the vet. I would take him into the vet first thing tomorrow.

Even though a picture would help to understand better the underlying cause, This presentation could be due to a trauma or localized spot of skin infection (likely to be caused by bacteria). A check up, appropriate disinfection and possibly antibiotics (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) are needed to solve the problem. Disinfection may be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths. Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any licking/scratching (if any). This is commonly seen when they get a skin infection (aka hot-spots). The neck is a common place for this to happen, because moisture often gets trapped under their collar and/or loose skin. It appears to be minor, so you can try a couple of things at home to get clear the infection. 1) Clip the hair around the area and expose all of the lesion(s). There may be more than one of these. 2) Wash the area with warm water and a medicated shampoo (can get this at the pet store) once a day. Use a cloth and gently wipe away the scabs. Do not scrub, because it will irritate the skin more. It's OK if all of the scabs do not come off in each washing. 3) Make sure the area is completely dry after washing. 4) Leave the collar off. You should start seeing good results within a week after starting this. It may take a few weeks before it's completely cleared. If two weeks go by and it's not getting any better, then it's best to have a veterinarian exam it. Also, if it appears to get worse, then take him to the vet for treatment. That looks more like a really inflamed “hot spot” to me. Put an ecollar on him so he can’t lick at it, and take him to your vet. He may need oral antibiotics and a prescription topical treatment. Hey! I would recommend either taking to a veterinarian or clipping the hair. It looks like what we refer to as a hot spot or moist pyoderma. This is a superficial skin infection. You can try medicated shampoos but might need antibiotics from a vet. Most of the time this happens due to an allergy and itchy skin.
