My Lab has hair loss, flaky skin, itching, and red eyes. What's wrong?

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | 2 years and 6 months old | 66 lbs

My 2.5 years old lab is suffering by a hair loss and flaking on skin. He's also drooling than usual, itching and bit dull. Also his eyes turned slightly reddish. He hasn't lost any weight though. What could be the cause of this and how long would it take to cure this ?

Hi there! There are many different skin related diseases that can cause the signs that you describe. The most common diseases include infectious skin diseases (i.e. bacterial pyoderma, dermatophytosis), or ectoparasites (i.e. Demodex, fleas, lice). From the picture you provided Ecru looks as though he may be suffering from Demodex, more commonly known as mange.

To be certain of what exactly is going on with Ecru I recommend that he be seen by a veterinarian to evaluate samples of the affected areas of Ecru's skin under a microscope and get him on the appropriate medications and/or shampoos. It depends on what exactly is going on to know how long treatment will be, but I would estimate anywhere between 1 - 3 weeks of treatment.

I am so sorry to hear you are having these issues with Ecru. There are several possible causes from seasonal allergy to food allergy, or skin parasites like fleas or mange.

What concerns me the most are the red eyes at the moment. Thank you for providing an excellent picture, it seems red and has discharge. Start by placing an e-collar or cone on Ecru to prevent scratching or rubbing. If the eye is infected it is likely painful, this will prompt Ecru to scratch or rub his eye. However, this could inflict further damage, infection or even an ulceration.

Because eye concerns with dogs, such as infections, corneal ulcerations, cataracts and glaucoma, can progress rapidly in dogs I would have him examined by your veterinarian to diagnose the issue. The precise medication can then be dispensed by your veterinarian. The vet will also be able to examine his skin and find the cause and prescribe a treatment plan.

Please do not attempt to treat an eye infection at home with any over the counter medications, drops or ointments. This can lead to permanent damage and unnecessary pain or discomfort.

Hello and thank you for your question! It sounds like Ecru is dealing with a possible combination of allergies and a skin infection. I cannot see in detail enough from the photo the areas of concern but I can see hair thinning and some flaking of the skin. If it is an allergy that Ecru is dealing with, there are multiple things that you can begin over the counter with him. I am not sure what is available in your area but some things that I would want Ecru to be started on would be the following:
1. Welactin fish oil or something comparable
2. Essential 6 spot on by Dermoscent or something comparable
3. Duoxo chlorhexidine PS shampoo (bathe twice weekly until resolved) or something comparable
4. Benadryl (50mg) by mouth every 12 hours

If you are able to be seen by your veterinarian, I would schedule an appointment as the above recommendations may not be available where you are. There are most likely different products available and your veterinarian would know which products would work in place of the above recommendations. Skin problems can take some time to resolve as sometimes it takes multiple treatments and multiple medications to address the primary problem. I hope this helps! Why is my Lab puppy losing hair, itchy, and has dry skin?

Ghost's skin definitely doesn't look normal. I would suspect an external parasite is the most likely cause. Fleas, scabies and demodex are all possibilities despite a negative skin scrape (sometimes you just don't get a diagnostic sample). I would recommend to put him on a product called NexGard for the next three months. This medication will take care of all three parasites. If Ghost does not respond to the treatment, then I would recommend a food trial with a hydrolyzed protein diet. It appears by the pictures that he may also have a secondary skin infection, take him into the veterinarian's office and to see if antibiotics and/or a medicated shampoo is warranted.

My Lab has peeling skin, scabs, and bleeding. What's the cause?

It sounds like your dog has a skin infection, most likely caused by allergies or fleas. The allergies can be from a protein in her food or to something in the environment, like grasses, pollens, dust, etc. I would recommend taking Praisy in to see the vet so she can be started on some antibiotics to help clear up the skin and get on a good flea control. You may also ask about a medicated shampoo, these can help clear up the skin more quickly. I would also recommend discussing with your vet some options for medication to help control the allergy symptoms like Atopica, Apoquel, or Cytopoint. Good luck!

My dog has an itchy rash. What are the common causes and solutions?

Poor Laboo! This scratching can be caused by fleas, mites, ringworm, or allergies. If he isn't up to date on his flea treatment, I can give you one for him. First, I would give him Capstar. It's a one time pill that starts killing fleas within 30 minutes. Then follow up with a spot on treatment, such as Advantage or Revolution. This is a treatment that has to be used once a month. You will also have to disinfect the environment. Wash his bedding in hot soapy water, and vacuum the furniture and carpet surfaces. You can use a spray to kill fleas in the house, such as Indorex, or a flea bomb would work well to kill the fleas in the home. If he is up to date on his flea treatment, I recommend taking him into the vet for an exam today or tomorrow. The vet can do blood tests, skin scrapings, and use a Wood's lamp to diagnose allergies, mites, and ringworm. Once the cause of the itching is found, the vet can prescribe the appropriate treatment. Is my Lab's hair loss, bald spots, and skin issues demodex or allergies?

It is very possible that Rylie has both demodex as well as underlying allergies. Demodex is a mite that we commonly see in young dogs, like Rylie. It is very easy to detect on skin scrape, so your vet should be able to readily tell you if she has it or not. Allergies can be a little more difficult to figure out, as they can be environmental, food related, or seasonal. If it is a diet related allergy, it could take 2 months of a new diet to see any improvement. Since she has a few pimples, I would be concerned that she may be developing a skin infection that requires antibiotics. I would take Rylie in to have an exam with your vet and a skin work up to see what the underlying cause of her hair loss is and what treatment she needs to be on.

My lab just got fixed and has bald spots and dry skin. What's wrong?

Sorry to hear that Rylie's hair is not looking it's best. If she is developing bald spots I would be concerned about some underlying skin or metabolic condition going on. She likely needs to have her skin examined and potentially a few test (skin scrape to look for mites/bacteria/yeast, fungal culture, etc). A simple thing you can try at home is bathing her in an oatmeal based shampoo to see if that helps, as it won't hurt her. However if you don't see any improvement and/or her bald areas are getting worse, I would take her in to have a vet look at her as she may need medications.
