What's this growth on my 9-month-old Boxer puppy? Is it a wart?

Pet's info: Dog | Boxer | Female | unspayed | 9 months and 10 days old | 52 lbs

I found this growth on my 9 month old female boxer. She is up to date with her shots. I am wondering if this is a wart? She eats Performatrin large breed puppy food. Ive noticed her skin is a lil dry, flakes on her red fur. I have pictures of the growth but don't see how to add them Thank you! Kari

As for the growth, in such a young puppy is it more likely to be a benign growth like a wart. Boxers are prone to mast cell tumors, so there is a potential it could be that, but it would be rare as there are mostly seen in Boxers around eight years of age. I would have Myra seen by a vet for it. The vet can perform a test called a fine needle aspirate on it. To do this, the vet sticks a small needle into the lump to get a sample of it's cells, and examines the cells on a slide under a microscope. It's usually painless to the animal, and relatively quick to perform.

My 9-month-old puppy has bumps that look like warts. Are they serious?

Mast cell tumors are very uncommon in young dogs, so if the masses look like viral papillomas, those would be more common in a 9 month old puppy. Viral papillomas have a pretty characteristic appearance, but it is always a good idea to have your vet examine Daphne and make the diagnosis. Why does my Boxer have a new, non-red bump on his stomach area?

Hello If possible a photograph of this lump would be helpful. It could be a lipoma (a harmless fatty tumor) but Boxers are known for developing mast cell tumors on their skin. Those types of tumors need to be removed as they can cause issues with the GI tract and even anaphylactic reactions.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This could be a benign or malignant growth. Even young dogs can develop growths. This can be a viral wart or another tumor type like a mast cell tumor, histiocytoma, among many others. This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. I recommend that you have her evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. I am really hoping for something benign. My Boxer has a red bump on her inner front leg. What could it be?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! A lot if skin bumps can look the same. But for a young dog and the location of it being on a leg it is likely a benign growth called a histiocytoma. They usually spontaneously regress in a few months. The other possibility is a Mast cell tumor, which can be common in Boxers. If the bump grows larger or doesn't go away in 2-3 months I would have your Vet examine it and consider aspirating it to see what it could be. It is never wrong to get it looked at sooner either! My puppy has a growth on her face. Is it a wart or something else?

Hi there and thanks for posting on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! From the picture, it looks similar to a wart which can be common in younger animals and puppies. Often times, these will not pose a problem and will regress on their own. I would keep an eye on it and if it starts getting larger or changing in shape or color in any way, please have your veterinarian take a closer look. It's usually painless to the animal, and relatively quick to perform. Once the cause of the lump is diagnosed, the vet can discuss treatment options if needed.
