What is this growth on my dog's butt? What treatment is needed?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This could be a benign or malignant growth. There is no way of knowing what it is just based on its appearance. Based on the location, often times these tumors are benign in nature and are known as perianal adenomas though about 10% are malignant and again it could be really any other tumor type. This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. I am really hoping for something benign. This could be a severely abscessed anal gland/sac or a tumor or a perineal hernia. This can only be diagnosed with a hands-on exam. You should have it examined by your veterinarian, as it is not possible to distinguish these by just looking at a photo. An abscess can usually be treated with antibiotics and/or be lanced, and a hernia may have to be fixed surgically. To identify a tumor, your vet may want to do a fine needle aspirate (he takes some material from the bump with a needle and then looks at it under the microscope) to determine whether the mass is concerning.

Hello, sorry to hear about Bear. Its difficult to tell exactly what that is without looking at the structure and what makes up the little nodule. That is, the cells forming the little nodule would need to be evaluated to tell exactly what that is. Given that it is a small area, it could be removed and submitted to biopsy to determine the cellular make up. Alternatively, you can monitor to see if the nodule resolves. If it goes away within a few days, then this is likely nothing of big concern. More severe things this could represent such as cancerous tumor can begin by looking like this. If this is indeed something more aggressive, then it may continue to grow and get worse. If so, then this should definitely be evaluated by their veterinarian.
