My dog growls and whines at other dogs. Is it aggression? What to do?

It sounds like Muggs is bring quite seriously aggressive. Firstly you should have him checked by your vet for any medical reason that could explain his behaviour. Following that you need to go back to basics with his training and give him the confidence not be nervous. In a difficult situation like this I would highly recommend employing the service of an animal behaviourist. Your vet may be able to help by prescribing medications but it usually comes down to behaviour and training.

1) He may be apprehensive or suspicious at first but eventually accepts the person as a non-threat. Try to expose him to different people and places. Do this gradually so as to not overwhelm him. A pheromone product, such as the Adaptil collar, may decrease any anxiety. Remove him from any negative stimuli or stressful situations before he escalates. Praise good behavior consistently. 2) Whining is the way he lets you know he is unsure or fearful of something or he wants it. It may precede the bark. 3) It may be a preference or he may have a bit of anxiety when you're gone. 4) Not unless you have an issue with it or if he does it at inappropriate times. I'm sorry that you're having this problem with Cssh! Aggression issues between dogs can be very complex, so without being able to actually meet him in person and observe his interactions with the other dogs, it's very difficult to say what might be causing this. Some dogs simply don't get along well with "new" dogs once they have grown out of their puppy stage - this could well be the case with your dog, since he's about 6-7 months old now. This isn't necessarily abnormal, but it may mean that your dog is not a good candidate for casual socializing with strange dogs. If you want to try and get a better idea of what may be causing Cssh's aggressive behavior and see if anything can be done to improve it, I would recommend making an appointment with a veterinary behaviorist - he/she can evaluate your dog in person and help you understand exactly what is happening. If needed, they can also help you put together a detailed plan to work on the problem. Your veterinarian should be able to find out where your nearest veterinary behaviorist is located, and set up a referral for you if you wish. In the meantime, I would recommend not allowing Cssh to interact with any dogs that he doesn't already know and like since there is a significant risk that he will continue to behave aggressively, which could cause injury to him or other dog.

Aggression is a complex behavior because it can be due to dominance, fear, anxiety or possessive behavior. Unless you are very familiar with identifying canine body language as well as training, it may be difficult for you to train him without assistance. You need to know the reason why he is doing it in order to adjust your own behavior. Your best option is to work with a trainer who can teach you to recognize the body language and then how to modify your behavior to change Oscar's behavior. As an unneutered male, he is starting to feel the effects of male hormones, which can manifest in aggressive behavior. You can try to help him acclimate to other dogs by introducing them in a controlled manner, with both dogs on leashes and through a fence initially until you can see how they will react to one another. Some barking and growling is normal but by reassuring them both without getting too excited can help. The more excited you become, the more he will, and he may feel he needs to be protective of you. Additionally, work with your dog away from other dogs. Play, take him for runs (Huskies are born runners and are very high energy, as I'm sure you are aware.), get him involved in obedience, play fetch, get him involved in dog agility, flyball, anything and everything to keep him well exercised and tied. This will help him be calm and well behaved the rest of the time since a tired dog is a happy dog. And, unless you plan to breed him because he is an exemplary example of his breed, consider getting him neutered. This will remove the primary source of the hormones most responsible for aggression and will also help with other behavioral issues in the future, as well as reducing the urge to roam in search of females. This will keep him safer and less likely to be hit by a car if he does get out on his own.

It depends a bit on how severe the problem is. If he just doesn't like interacting with other dogs, but is able to ignore them when they're around as long as he's left alone, this is perfectly normal - some dogs don't have much interest in meeting or playing with strange dogs, just like some humans don't want to strike up a conversation with everyone they meet. I strongly recommend you consult with a professional, in-home dog trainer. You need a trainer to come to your house so they can see the behavior and the interaction of all the family members with Max. This is your best bet. Aggression problems need special care and it is not recommended that you try to correct this on your own. You may give him the wrong signals and make him worse. Especially with his breed you need to do this correctly and since his life start was not good that plays into his issues. This is a situation that definitely needs professional intervention.
