Dog growling after tick in ear. Could it be an ear infection?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | English Springer Spaniel | Male | neutered | 2 years and 1 month old | 33 lbs

A tick fell out of the ear of my dog, and he’s been growling at us when we’re near his head for the past few weeks, could that be the reason why? And if so, how do we prevent it from happening again? Or how do we know if there are more??

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Without seeing Prince it is hard to say, but it sounds like he might have an ear infection. I recommend taking him to a vet for an ear exam. If there looks to be one, they will need to look at the discharge under a microscope to determine the type of infection and the best medication to treat it. Good luck and kisses to Prince!
