My Great Dane has a growing, painless lump on his side. What is it?

To do this, the vet sticks a small needle into the lump to get a sample of its cells, and examines the cells on a slide under a microscope. It's usually painless to the animal, and relatively quick to perform. Once the cause of the lump is diagnosed, the vet can discuss treatment options if needed. This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. I recommend that you have her evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. I am really hoping for something benign. Poor Diesel! Is he painful? You need to take him to your vet. In an older Great Dane, I am so sorry to tell you this but I would be most concerned about a possible bone tumor. Poor Axel! Because this swelling keeps getting bigger, I would be concerned that it is a cyst, a benign tumor, or a malignant tumor. I'm not sure what medications he was given, but clearly they aren't working if the swelling has gotten bigger. Diamond needs to be examined by the veterinarian today. This could be a cyst, an abscess or a necrotic tumor. It looks like it could be infected whatever the cause. If it is a cyst or tumor, it will need to be removed. If it is an abscess, it will need a drain. It probably does hurt. She needs an exam, possible diagnostics, medications to address and infection (if present) and pain. She also needs an elizabethan collar so she cannot lick the area.
