Could grooming trauma or separation anxiety make my dog aggressive?

I'm not exactly sure this indicate abuse. Dogs that are under-socialized or are not used to places such as the groomers or veterinarian can act out like this from anxiety or stress, not necessarily abuse. That said, if you do suspect abuse, it would be best to speak with Loyal's owner about it. I would definitely talk with Loyal's vet to see if there is anything that can be given, such as a sedative, before he has to go to the vet or other scary places. It is also a good idea to speak with a trainer or veterinary behaviorist in person that can help with desensitization training which can help Loyal get more used to these situations in a safe manner, and help him relax and settle in. I am very sorry that happened with Tiffany. I am sure it was upsetting for you both. I would suggest asking the groomer if you can do what are called "happy visit". Where you take Tiffany in to the groomer and she stays for increasing time and has increasing interaction with the groomers. For example the first time just walk her in for 5 minutes or so. Then on the next visit she gets a few pets from the groomer. The next visit the groomer can perhaps give her a treat. If you could do this a few times before her next grooming appointment I believe it will help.

Sudden behavior changes can sometimes indicate illness or pain, so if this change happened abruptly, I would first schedule a vet visit to rule out any health issues that could be causing it. If Daisy checks out healthy, it may be that she is experiencing some separation anxiety of sorts. Perhaps she's bonded with you because you take care of her, or she was fearful of something and trusts you. Having your grandma care for her more if possible, such as brushing her, offering treats, etc may help them to bond again. Although you might not think so, a hair cut or any grooming is a potentially frightening ordeal for a dog. This is particularly true for a young, small dog. I would imagine that Azriel had never really experienced anything like this until now. If he did fairly well during the actually grooming, great! If he showed any signs of overt fear or aggressiveness however, his level of anxiety was likely to be quite high. I would first try to desensitize Azriel to grooming, by performing similar tasks like that to him at home. Any time that he reacts in a positive way or does not appear to be frightened, reward the behavior vigorously. This will hopefully condition him to view grooming as a positive experience rather than one he should fear. Some dogs, no matter what, never are able to adjust to this experience or experiences like it. If you feel that this is the case, you may want to discuss this issue with your local vet. Often times, there are certain medications (prescription) that can be given prior to a stressful event such as grooming that will make it less like to cause anxiety. If he keeps this up for more than 12 hrs, then I would get concerned and recommend taking him in to your vet for a thorough exam. His nicked toe may be the source of the pain. If he is painful, then your vet can prescribed pet friendly pain medication for him to hopefully subside his anxiety. In the meantime you can do a thorough examination yourself at home, to see you can locate any bleeding areas or trauma to his skin. You can also just give him a warm water Epsom salt bath to help ease any tenderness he may be having. Hi there, sorry to hear of your situation. It sounds a lot like Dakota had become very anxious and most likely dead aggressive due to a bad experience that she had before. This is actually quite common, escpeically amongst several female animals. My best advice if you are a guest here is to completely separate your pet from the others for the duration of the stay-for the safety of all pets involved. Most issues like this require lengthy training and re-programming to decrease fear and anxiety in your pet. She is also older and will likely take longer. Depending on the length of your stay-it will probably not be possible to do the necessary re-training whilst you are there. There are medications to lessen anxiety for a short time-but would require a visit to your local vet for an exam and likely blood work to make sure they medications would be safe for Dakota to take. It's not an easy situation and there is no simple answer or solution for this issue, all i can do is advise you to take him to a dog trainer to try and get his aggressiveness down as much as possible.
