My dog is grieving a lost companion. How can I comfort him now?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 4 months old | 36 lbs

Just recently I lost my fur-boy and he was a short-hair domestic and a constant companion of my little Chihuahua whenever I went to work each day. Now my little one is missing his brother and constantly looks for him not understanding his big brother has passed. What can I do to comfort him?

I am so sorry to hear this! It is always sad to lose a 4 legged family members but it is also heart breaking to watch their house mates suffer the same grievance. I would make sure to give your dog plenty of extra TLC and spend extra time with him when you can. I would also consider put a calming collar on him like adaptil to help calm him while you are away. There are also calming chews you could try like composure or the prescription version composure pro. At the end of the day, it is going to take time for him to grieve just like us. Unfortunately, some do not completely heal until they have a new companion to be with. I hope this helps and please know you are in my thoughts.

First off, I'm so sorry you recently lost Squeekers! It sounds like she has a very full and long life, but it doesn't make it any easier to lose a dog. Please accept my condolences for your loss. It is normal that Chompers will look for her as he grew up with her, but as time passes, he will stop looking for her. While dogs can and do grieve the loss of a companion, it typically does not last long and should not affect them physically. During this time, I would give him lots of love and attention, play with him, and give him treats. Make sure to increase the amount of attention you give him during this time to help support him, which is the best thing to do for him. One day when you are ready, you may want to get another dog as a companion for Chompers, which he will likely appreciate. Don't do that until you are ready however, allow yourself time to grieve the loss of Squeekers. When you are ready to open your heart to another dog, it will benefit both you and Chompers. Again, I'm so sorry for your loss and I hope this helps!

My dog lost his mate. Why is he suddenly whining, humping, and clingy?

This could be a delayed grieving from loosing his mate. I would try some calming pills like vetriscience composure and a calming collar like adaptil. These will hopefully take the edge off to help him. If not, I would consider talking to your vet about starting him on an anti-anxiety medicine to see if this helps. I hope this helps!

Senior dog grieving. Should I take him to the vet after pet loss?

I'm so very sorry to hear that you lost Tiny's companion. It can be very difficult for dogs to understand the loss of another pet. Unfortunately, we go not have great options for treatment, but sometimes we will try anti-anxiety medications, so you can certainly talk to your veterinarian about that. The only other thing that I have tried successfully are Bach Flower Essences. The most common is Rescue Remedy, but you can also do a custom formulation. I'm very sorry you recently lost one of your dogs! It sounds like Bonsai is grieving, and that does happen when they lose a companion. This grieving will pass over time, and he will return to normal. How to comfort an adopted dog grieving the loss of a loved one?

Hmmm, my answer got cut off. Stick with the same food and treats if possible. If he has a dog bed he's used to, keep that available for him. Finally, if you have access to your aunt's clothes, it may help to give him an article of her clothes that she frequently wore that might still have her scent. The scent will eventually wear off, but in the meantime he'll be adjusting to his new environment and routine. The fact that you're asking tells me you want to do right by him, and I think you (and he) will do fine! Good luck, hope this helps!

I am sure it is very difficult to be going through this. Dogs are emotional and can become distressed / sad when a loved one passes away. Unfortunately, it just takes time.
