Why are my dog's green crusty scabs growing back after treatment?

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. What year did scribing sounds like a bacterial skin infection. It sounds like it had done okay on the prescribed course of treatment. Unfortunately, sometimes infections may require several courses of antibiotics or several different antibiotics before an adequate response is achieved. I would suggest going back in to see your veterinarian who initially prescribed the antibiotics and shampoo. The shampoo that I'm most recommend is duoxo chlorhexidine PS combination and bathe twice weekly until the infection is resolved. You can find this shampoo online if you're vet does not carry it. It is difficult to say for sure what the cause is as there is a lot of matted fur and crusted material over the area. I do see the green pus you are referring to, which to me tells me that there is likely an infection going on. This may be due to a resistant bacterial infection, which may explain why it has not been responding to treatment. If you have already been giving antibiotics and the area is not improving, it may be time to culture the area to determine what the causative bacterium is so that the most appropriate antibiotic can be used. If you are able to, I would shave all the hair away from this area so that you can get this area clean and keep it that way. I would use betadine and dilute that in saline so that you have a light brown solution to help disinfect the area several times per day. There is a product which you can purchase online that may help called vetericyn. I hope this helps and hope this problem resolves soon! Ouch! If you haven't already, your may want to have a biopsy done of the scab or the affected area and then sent to a lab. This can help determine what is going on with the cells there (whether its abnormal or just poor healing) and can also be checked for bacteria, yeast, etc that may be slowing healing and need treatment.

Hi, thanks for using PetCoach! From your pictures I think the crusts are epidermal collarettes which are the end results of a pustule. A pustule usually indicates a bacterial skin infection. Skin infections can be from allergies due to food or the environment. Ideally oral antibiotics are used to clear bacterial skin infections. If she is also itchy then we prescribe medications to helps that as well. Below is a medicated shampoo that may help. I recommend bathing 2-3 times per week and allowing the lather to sit on for 10 mins on the affected areas before rinsing. If the skin doesn't improve I recommend a Vet exam. Based on the pictures and your description, I suspect Mazie may have a bacterial skin infection. I would recommend having this looked at by a veterinarian so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. From your description, it sounds as though Archie may have an allergy of skin infection. I would recommend starting the below products and if the skin condition worsens or does not improve, I would have a veterinarian examine the area so that further testing can be done to help determine what the cause could be. Hello. They appear to be epidermal collaretts, very typical of some skin infections caused by a staph bacterium. It stands to reason that they are clearing up because Bulya was on antibiotics. You can continue to treat these at home just by using an over the counter anti bacterial shampoo, one with benzoyl peroxide or 2-4% chlorhexidine. These shampoos are available at most large pet retailers or on-line. If you can bathe Bulya twice a week, letting her sit in the suds for 10 minutes before rinsing, all the lesions should clear in 4-6 weeks.
