My puppy has giardia. Is it safe for her to play with other dogs?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shiba Inu | Female | spayed | 2 months and 23 days old | 15 lbs

If my pup (12 weeks old) has giardia, are there specific precautions I need to take around other dogs? We are just getting ready to start socializing her with some adult (5-7 years) dogs. She is a Shiba Inu and needs socialization.

Giardia is transmitted through contact with an infected dog's poop, so it would be a good idea to give her rear end a quick wash before any outings with other dogs to make sure everything is clean. If she has an accident during the play date, make sure to clean it up and disinfect the area. There is no risk of transmission from casual contact, playing together, sniffing noses, etc. so it should still be fine for her to get out and socialize as long as you take appropriate precautions :)
