My dog has gastroenteritis. What foods are safe to feed her now?

You can put Cocoon bland food for two days, such as boiled white rice and boiled white boneless chicken meat, fed in small quantities over several feeds and then transition back to regular food slowly over a few days. If this does not clear up the diarrhea or if the vomiting increases, or if your dog gets lethargic, it needs to see a veterinarian for a recheck.

For any GI upset, a bland diet (such as white rice and plain boiled white meat chicken) that is easily digestible is a good option. If chicken isn't an option for her, very lean ground beef browned in a skillet with no oil is another good option. If she continues vomiting, doesn't want to eat or otherwise starts acting ill, then I would recommend having her evaluated by her regular veterinarian. Good luck!

Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in Luna's normal diet. If she vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away. Stop giving her food like carne burritos and bologna. They are not healthy for her and cause GI upset. She doesn't need bread either.

Just like you pointed out, there are many different diets in the market to the point that it is hard to decide which one is best for patients. For any concerns on digestion, I prefer a veterinary prescription diet called Purina EN which is easily digestible and at the same time very good in terms of nutrition. It is also palatable and most dogs seem to like it. Alternatively, you could consider another diet which is the Hill's id which is similar to the Purina EN though in my experience it is not as palatable and some dogs will not eat it. Your veterinarian would have to write up a prescription for this diet. Good luck and have a good night!

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Coco. I would consider a prescription low fat diet such as Purina EN canned food. It is highly digestible palatable diet that easy on the gastrointestinal tract. You can also add Fortiflora as a probiotic. Most dogs like the taste and it can help repopulate her gut with good bacteria after the antibiotics. I hope this information helps!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Bastiann! If Bastian has food allergies then he should avoid chicken. I am suspicious that is the case because rice with fish is an odd bland diet for your Vet to recommend. You could try boiled hamburger, pork, or turkey. If you know someone who hunts you can try venison or bison. Just be sure to get all the fat off of it. I would avoid organ meat. If Bastian doesn't have a food allergy or inflammatory bowel disease I see no reason why you can't boil chicken breast. Also try some meat flavored baby foods to mix in to entice him.
